IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The most important thing about being wealthy is that one has the opportunity to help others in need, a statement I couldn't agree with more.

Rich is not only rich with money, but with humanity. Being rich comes from within. What makes you a rich person? In my opinion, true wealth is not simply measure by the amount of money someone possesses, but by how they choose to use it. Having financial stability is a blessing that gives people the ability to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, whether by supporting charities, helping struggling families or providing opportunities for those who are less fortunate.

One of the greatest advantages of being wealthy is having the freedom to help others without putting oneself in financial difficulty. For instance, a rich individual can donate to organisations that provide food, education and healthcare to people in need. This can have a much greater impact than simply spending money on unnecessary luxury. Moreover, helping others can give a person a sense of purpose and fulfillment that material possessions often cannot provide.

In this sense, wealth becomes valuable not because of what it allows someone to buy, but because of what it allows them to give. However, I do not believe that only wealthy people can be considered rich. Someone with very little money can still be generous, compassionate and willing to support others. A person who doesn't donate their money, but donates their time to volunteer. Helping a neighbor or simply offering emotional support can be just as valuable to society as someone who donates large amounts of money,

In conclusion, I strongly agree that one of the most important benefits of being wealthy is having the opportunity to help others. Nevertheless, I believe that true richness comes from within, and a person's generosity, humanity and willingness to make a difference are ultimately more important than the amount of money they have.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed the prompt effectively by clearly stating your position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout the essay. You explore the idea that wealth provides a unique opportunity to help others, while also providing a nuanced counter-perspective regarding the definition of 'richness'. The ideas are well-developed, particularly in the second and third paragraphs where you provide concrete examples like supporting charities or volunteering. To reach a higher band, you could further extend the discussion on why this is the 'most important' aspect of wealth compared to other potential benefits, such as personal security or influence, to ensure the argument is fully explored.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In this sense', and 'However' to link your points effectively. The transition between the idea of financial wealth and personal character is smooth. To improve, ensure that all sentences within a paragraph are fully integrated; for instance, the sentence 'A person who doesn't donate their money, but donates their time to volunteer' is a sentence fragment that disrupts the flow. Strengthening the connection between these minor clauses would enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'financial stability', 'meaningful difference', 'compassionate', and 'fulfillment' appropriately. The language is natural and conveys your meaning clearly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'true wealth is not simply measure by' (should be 'measured') and 'Rich is not only rich with money' (which is slightly repetitive). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions to demonstrate greater flexibility and precision in your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and the majority of your writing is error-free. You handle complex ideas well, such as in the sentence 'Wealth becomes valuable not because of what it allows someone to buy, but because of what it allows them to give.' However, there are occasional grammatical slips, such as the aforementioned sentence fragment in the fourth paragraph and the passive voice error 'is not simply measure'. These errors are infrequent and do not impede communication, but they prevent the essay from reaching the highest band for accuracy.
