IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Many people believe that wealthy individuals have the opportunity to help others in difficult situations, while others argue that people can improve their economic status and gain respect in society through hard work. I strongly agree that rich people have the opportunity to assist those in need by providing food and donating money.

First and foremost, in many countries, people are unable to fulfil their basic needs, especially food, which is an essential requirement for every human being. Wealthy individuals have the opportunity to provide financial assistance to people who are struggling in their lives. This can also help reduce crime rates because when people have enough food, particularly for their children, they are less likely to become involved in criminal activities. Moreover, providing food to needy people is morally responsible and can improve their quality of life. For example, in Bahria Town, Lahore, food is provided to a large number of needy individuals on a daily basis. Such initiatives can help reduce poverty and social problems.

Furthermore, every citizen requires financial resources to meet essential needs such as education, healthcare, accommodation and marriage. Affluent people can support disadvantaged individuals during difficult times, which can help create a more balanced society. For example, many successful businesspeople donate money to educational institutions, allowing these organisations to provide free or affordable education to underprivileged students. As a result, more people can access education and have better opportunities to improve their future.

In conclusion, wealthy people can play an important role in supporting those who struggle to meet their basic needs. By providing food, financial assistance and educational opportunities, they can improve people's lives and contribute to reducing poverty and crime in society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response clearly addresses the prompt and maintains a consistent position throughout. You have successfully identified the core argument—that wealth provides a unique opportunity to assist others—and supported this with relevant examples, such as the provision of food and educational funding. The ideas are well-developed, particularly in the second and third paragraphs, where you explain the societal benefits of such actions. To reach a higher band, ensure that your introduction does not introduce a counter-argument that you do not intend to discuss, as the mention of 'gaining respect through hard work' is not explored further. Focusing solely on your own position will make your argument more cohesive and focused.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'As a result' to guide the reader through your argument. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices slightly more, as some of the transitions are quite standard. Additionally, ensure that the link between your examples and the main topic sentence remains tight to avoid any slight shifts in focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'financial assistance', 'underprivileged students', and 'essential requirements' are used correctly and appropriately for an academic context. There is a good awareness of collocation, and your word choice is generally accurate. To move into the higher bands, try to incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items to express your ideas with greater nuance. For example, instead of 'help', you could use 'alleviate', 'ameliorate', or 'facilitate' where appropriate to enhance the academic tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay displays a good control of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as the conditional structure 'when people have enough food... they are less likely to become involved'. Punctuation is generally accurate, and your sentences are clear and easy to read. There are very few errors, and those that exist do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical forms, such as passive voice constructions or more advanced relative clauses, while maintaining the high level of accuracy you have already achieved.
