IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is true that having a significant amount of money in this contemporary age is a true achievement and blessing in disguise. While many people argue that a rich individual should spend his earnings mainly for his own necessity and amusement, I firmly believe that being rich provides a wonderful opportunity to extend helping measures for the people in dire need rather than being absolutely self absorbed.

First of all, in this current age, a clear social distinction is prevalent in our society in terms of financial capacity. While many people have the means of spending for their basic requirements and amusements, there are still a significant number of individuals who cannot achieve their basic human rights due to the financial barrier. This distinction can be alleviated if the rich society decides to extend its contribution. For instance, a dedicated funding organization for the homeless people can easily arrange substantial amount of money to arrange adequate living conditions for the poor community. It is also evident that this sort of activity can reduce social crimes to a great extent.

Furthermore, being rich also opens up the scope to contribute in different social and educational establishments which are necessary for the community. For example, a welfare fund for the poor students who aspire to study in abroad but do not have the financial means to do so, can easily open up the opportunity for them. Moreover, a rich person can always contribute for the improvement of his respective local community. For example, in any community, a well organized library is essential for the growing generation. A rich person can obviously contribute to make such arrangements.

Admittedly, it is also true that a person has all the rights to spend his own hard earned money in whatever way he likes. He has to fulfill his basic requirements first with opportunities to spend for his relaxation and amusement. Nevertheless, he should also separate a particular amount for helping people in distress and consider it as his social responsibility.

In conclusion, our society often suffers from the economic barrier between rich and poor. This distinction can be largely reduced if the rich society performs its social resbonsibility. This will surely create a balance in our society with reduced crime rates and increased safety.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have clearly addressed the prompt by taking a firm stance in favor of the idea that being rich provides an opportunity to help others. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly in the second and third paragraphs, where you provide relevant examples such as funding for the homeless and educational support for students. To reach a higher band, ensure that your counter-argument in the fourth paragraph is more deeply integrated into the overall argument, perhaps by explicitly contrasting it with your main point rather than just acknowledging it as a separate thought.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'First of all', 'Furthermore', 'Nevertheless', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the relationship between sentences is generally clear. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, in the second paragraph, 'this sort of activity' clearly refers back to the previous sentence, which is good practice.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'blessing in disguise', 'dire need', 'financial barrier', and 'social responsibility' are used appropriately. There is an attempt to use less common items, which adds to the quality of the writing. However, there are minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'extend helping measures' (better: 'provide assistance') and 'study in abroad' (should be 'study abroad'). These do not impede communication, but refining these collocations would elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is generally good. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'contribute for the improvement' (should be 'contribute to') and 'resbonsibility' (spelling error). Additionally, 'a dedicated funding organization for the homeless people' should be 'for homeless people' (no 'the' needed). Despite these occasional errors, your grammatical control is strong, and the meaning is never obscured.
