IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The advantage of being wealthy is that you can assist others with oppertunities. Some people agree with that concept while others don't. In my opinion it is true to some extent. Rich community brings oppertunity for better living standards of those who can't afford it. We will talk about the justifications of rich people bringing chances to grow for others.

The first strong evidence is that an affording person can easily provide money to the one whos asking for it. This way a wealthy man actually fund plenty of amount for people's need, such as education. Almost every business man fund any institute or low income school to provide free or cheap and quality education to the deservings. In our areas, established comunity help poor people with money to fullfill their needs.

Similarly, people fund different hospitals, so that sufferring people can get good and hygenic treatment. Cancer treatment is one of the expensive treatment that's neccessary and most of indiviuals can't afford it; hence, most of the time it was funded by elites of the society. In exact cases, other expensive treatments has funded by others. Likewise, society also assist the workers of their areas. They take special care of their needs and provide them with money and oppertunities to ease their life.

These days people don't use money for their personal benefits only but they take care of their surroundings. They provide oppertunities using their wealth to the ones who can't make thier both ends meet. So in a nut shell, Money do bring oppertunities not for you alone but of others too.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the role of wealth in helping others. However, the position is not fully developed. While you mention that you agree 'to some extent,' you do not clearly explain the other side of the argument—what else might be the 'most important' thing about being rich? The ideas are relevant, such as funding education and healthcare, but they are presented in a somewhat repetitive manner. To reach a higher band, ensure you explore the counter-argument or alternative perspectives more deeply to provide a more balanced and comprehensive discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices like 'Similarly' and 'Likewise' to link ideas. However, the progression between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'In exact cases, other expensive treatments has funded by others.' The use of referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure could benefit from more sophisticated linking words to improve the logical flow between your main points and your conclusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are several spelling errors, such as 'oppertunity' (opportunity), 'whos' (who is/who's), 'hygenic' (hygienic), and 'neccessary' (necessary). Additionally, some word choices are imprecise, such as 'an affording person' instead of 'a wealthy individual' or 'plenty of amount' which is grammatically incorrect. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and ensure you proofread for basic spelling accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay relies on a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('treatments has funded') and incorrect verb forms ('Money do bring'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction is often simplistic. To achieve a higher score, you should aim for more complex sentence structures and ensure that your subject-verb agreement and verb tense usage are consistent throughout the text.
