IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is widely argued that one of the most important actions that people can make after becoming rich is help others. Although there are some drawbacks to consider, I largely agree with the idea of helping others when people achieve financial success, as it contributes to economic and personal growth.

One major reason why supporting others is highly important is that it creates a sense of personal fulfilment. When people have achieved financial independence, helping others is an essential part of personal development. For instance, those who make donations to charity and contribute to helping others financially, often experience greater personal achievement than those who avoid these actions. Furthermore, governments often provide tax incentives and other benefits in taxation when individuals donate financial resources, allowing them not only to help others, but also manage their finances more effectively.

There are several ways to help others. Rich people often invest their money in developing business that generate employment opportunities for many people, which allows them meet their basic expenses, such as food, housing, healthcare and transportation, while also gradually raising their standard of living. As a result, a larger number of people achieve financial stability, which contribute to a country's economic development.

Nevertheless, there are some disadvantages associated with helping others. Many people may become over dependent economically instead of becoming more independent after receiving financial aid. Moreover, Financial support is often viewed as socialism in many contries, which negatively affect societies as a whole. However, by providing moderate financial supporte for those who need them and encouraging people to be more independent by also providing job opportunities, rich people can still continue to help others financially.

In conclusion, although supporting others can present some social challenges, I believe that its benefits are significant, especially those that contribute to personal and conomic growth. By making reasonable donations and financial aid, while also generating job opportunities, societies can benefit from helping others.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, maintaining a clear position throughout the essay. Your ideas regarding personal fulfillment and economic contribution are relevant and well-supported. However, the discussion on the 'disadvantages' of helping others is slightly underdeveloped and relies on some generalizations, such as the claim that financial support is viewed as 'socialism.' To reach a higher band, ensure that your counter-arguments are as logically robust as your main arguments. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the question of whether helping others is the most important aspect of being wealthy.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'For instance,' 'Furthermore,' 'Nevertheless,' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions between sentences could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'financial independence,' 'personal fulfillment,' and 'economic development.' There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'contries' instead of 'countries' and 'supporte' instead of 'support.' Additionally, some collocations could be more natural; for example, 'provide tax incentives and other benefits in taxation' is slightly redundant. Expanding your range of less common lexical items and ensuring accurate spelling would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('which contribute to a country's economic development' should be 'contributes') and minor punctuation or prepositional errors ('negatively affect' should be 'negatively affects'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater precision.
