IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 4.0)

For help others, few things are more crucial than rich. Nowadays, many would argue that the contemporary society has nearly transcended its traditional boundaries and will soon become boundless in its pursuit of rich for the benefits of helping others. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that helping others should be done through richness.

Naturally, rich in the form of development is considered more essential for help others, creating inexhaustible facilities for poor people that are not available from other sources.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 3.0

The response is significantly under the required 250-word minimum, reaching only 79 words. Consequently, the task is addressed only in a very minimal way. The ideas presented are underdeveloped and lack the necessary supporting arguments or examples required for an academic essay. The position is stated, but there is no meaningful exploration of the topic. Due to the severe lack of length and the failure to develop the argument, the response does not meet the requirements for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The essay is too short to demonstrate a clear logical progression or effective paragraphing. While there is a basic attempt to structure the response with an introduction and a body paragraph, the lack of content makes it difficult to assess the use of cohesive devices. The transition between the introduction and the body is abrupt, and the overall flow is hindered by the brevity of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. The student frequently uses the word 'rich' as a noun (e.g., 'pursuit of rich'), which is grammatically incorrect and indicates a lack of awareness regarding word forms and collocations. There is no attempt to use a wider range of vocabulary or more sophisticated academic language. The errors in word choice are frequent and impede the clarity of the message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The response contains several grammatical errors that affect readability. For example, 'For help others' should be 'To help others', and 'richness' is used incorrectly in the context of the argument. The sentence structures are simple and often awkward. There is a lack of variety in sentence construction, and the errors in basic grammar and word formation are persistent throughout the short text.
