IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Helping others is a fundamental human value that strengthens social bonds and promotes kindness, care and sympathy in the society. Some individuals believe that the opportunity to support the underprivileged people is an essential aspect of elite members of the society. I partly agree with this statement.

To commence with, wealthy individuals can provide financial resources which can improve their lives and contribute in the society welfare. The affluent individuals do charity and donate a portion of their income for unprivileged individuals to fulfil their basic requirement of food, clothes and shelter. The rich people can also provide employment and education to the poor individuals so that they can earn for their families and their own basic needs. For instance, Billionaire like Bill Gates and Ratan Tata have poured fortunes in eradicating diseases and improving education systems globally which has developed respect for them among poor people. Therefore helping others will foster the culture of empathy, cooperation and mutual respect.

Conversely, some people who are cable of earning money may depend on the affluent individual's support. That individual will not make any effort if everything is available free of cost

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, as it is significantly under-length at 190 words. This severely limits your ability to develop your ideas fully. While you present a clear position and provide relevant examples like Bill Gates and Ratan Tata, the discussion is truncated. The second body paragraph is incomplete, ending abruptly without a concluding thought or a balanced view. To improve, you must expand your arguments with more detailed explanations and ensure you provide a proper conclusion that summarises your main points. The current length prevents a higher score as the task is not fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay shows a basic level of organisation with a clear introduction and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'For instance', and 'Conversely' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is interrupted by the incomplete nature of the final paragraph. The referencing is generally clear, but the lack of a concluding paragraph makes the overall structure feel unfinished. To improve, ensure that each paragraph is fully developed and that you include a final summary to tie your arguments together, which will enhance the logical flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fundamental human value', 'underprivileged', and 'eradicating diseases'. There are some minor word choice errors, such as 'cable' instead of 'capable' and 'in the society welfare' instead of 'to societal welfare'. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited by the brevity of the essay. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your word forms are accurate. Expanding your vocabulary related to social and economic topics will also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'contribute in the society welfare' (should be 'contribute to societal welfare') and 'Billionaire like Bill Gates' (should be 'Billionaires like Bill Gates'). Additionally, there are punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'affluent individual's support' where the possessive is slightly awkward in context. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve your accuracy.
