IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is often argued that the greatest benefit of being wealthy is having the ability to help other people. I largely agree with this view because financial resources allow wealthy individuals to support disadvantaged people and contribute to society, although wealth also provides important personal benefits such as financial security.
One important reason why wealth can be valuable is that it gives people the opportunity to help those who are less fortunate. Wealthy individuals can donate money to charities, provide financial assistance to struggling families, or fund projects that benefit local communities. For example, a wealthy person could establish scholarships for students from low-income families, allowing them to receive a university education that they might otherwise be unable to afford. As a result, their wealth can have a long-term positive effect on other people's lives rather than benefiting only the person who possesses it.
However, being wealthy also provides significant personal advantages, particularly financial security. People with sufficient money can afford better healthcare, education, and housing, and they are better prepared for unexpected expenses. For instance, someone with substantial savings may be able to pay for expensive medical treatment without taking on significant debt. Therefore, wealth is not valuable only because it enables people to help others; it can also protect individuals and their families from financial difficulties. Nevertheless, I believe that using wealth to improve the lives of others gives it a greater social value.
In conclusion, I largely agree that one of the most important benefits of being rich is the opportunity to help others. Although wealth provides individuals with security and a comfortable life, using financial resources to support disadvantaged people can create benefits that extend beyond the individual.

The conclusion effectively synthesizes the points made, ensuring the response is cohesive and focused on the task requirements. The development of ideas is logical and consistent with the band 8 descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, starting with the introduction of the main argument, followed by supporting points in the body paragraphs, and a summary in the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'As a result', 'However', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between the discussion of helping others and the discussion of personal security is smooth. The flow of information is natural and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic essay. Phrases such as 'disadvantaged people', 'financial assistance', 'substantial savings', and 'social value' are used accurately. The language is precise and conveys your meaning clearly. While the vocabulary is effective and natural, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations to reach the highest band. However, the current range is sufficient to express complex ideas with precision, and there are no noticeable errors in word choice or collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'because financial resources allow...', 'although wealth also provides...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and verb tenses is strong. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The use of modal verbs and conditional structures is accurate and adds variety to your writing. The overall control of grammar is consistent with a high level of proficiency, showing flexibility and accuracy throughout the response.
