IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

A group of individual believe that most crucial part of being wealthiest person is that they have advantages to do social welfare. I agree to this statement to a large extent. My position is elaborated further with reasons and examples.

Firstly this is because if the person is rich they believe in doing a public welfare. This will reflect their kindness and a good behavior with others. They will think that god has chosen them to help others. and due to a lots of money it would be a great opportunity to help others. for instance they can help other in many ways such as donation, charity and also by giving necessary

helpful thing to needy person.

Secondly, if someone is welling to help other but that individual is not financially that strong that person will not be able to help. But if a rich person will have such helping willingness they can easily help other due to their financial stability . for instance if a rich person wants to do charity they can without being worried about it.

In contrast their are some drawbacks also some people who are rich and have opportunity also but they ignore to help other. because they think it is a waste of money to do public welfare they think others should also earn by themself. so it is important to be rich but to have good intension also play an important role.

In conclusion i would say that I largely agree to this point. As it is necessary to be rich to help other. only a nature of willingness would not be enough to do public welfare.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position of agreement. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. While you mention that wealth allows for charity, the arguments lack depth and specific examples. For instance, the point about 'god choosing them' is a subjective assertion rather than a well-developed argument. To improve, you should focus on extending your ideas by explaining the 'why' and 'how' more thoroughly, perhaps by discussing the systemic impact of wealth on social welfare rather than just individual acts of kindness. The conclusion is a bit brief and does not fully synthesize the points made in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive (e.g., 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'In contrast', 'In conclusion'). There are also issues with referencing and flow; for example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is abrupt. Some sentences are disjointed, such as 'But if a rich person will have such helping willingness they can easily help other due to their financial stability.' Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one will help achieve a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on basic terms like 'rich', 'help', and 'money' repeatedly. There are also some awkward collocations and word choice errors, such as 'welling to help' (willing to help) and 'good intension' (good intentions). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'philanthropy', 'financial capacity', 'altruism', or 'socio-economic status'. Expanding your range of synonyms will make your writing more engaging and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'A group of individual believe'), article usage (e.g., 'a lots of money'), and punctuation errors. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, such as 'They will think that god has chosen them to help others. and due to a lots of money it would be a great opportunity to help others.' Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement and pluralization will significantly improve your accuracy.
