IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Being resourceful or wealthy doesn't require the opportunity to help others. I don't fully agree to this statement. Although, it is true that being resourceful or belonging from a affluent background provides a smooth pathway of helping others. Providing aid to others is a noble cause but it should be done with consideration, and depends solely on the individual.

People belonging to upper echelons of the society or financially sound background often lack the tendency and sympathy towards helping others.

On the other hand, middle class people or to some extend people of modest background tend to aid people more in time of need. So in reality it depends on the personal character, environment, family upbringing and other factors which enables individual to help others who are in need. Helping someone all comes down to personal preference, while its impertinent that affluent people can contribute to reduce the inequality which is being created by the economic barrier leading them one step to equality. furthermore, it leads to the over reliance .

Often leading to reduced effort by the people in improving their situation by themselves. While, some people are in dire need for help while a small aid can improve their situation drastically. However not everyone is a wielder of golden heart furthermore in today's contemporary society People are very much cautious of each other due to increasing cases of exploitation or people taking kindness for granted.

However, it is indeed a fact that people of affluent background has more opportunity of helping others but at in the end it all comes down to personal preference or decision at an individual level.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether wealth is the most important factor in helping others. However, the development of ideas is inconsistent. While you present a clear position, some arguments are under-developed or confusing, such as the point about 'over reliance' and 'economic barrier,' which lacks sufficient explanation to be fully persuasive. The essay tends to over-generalize about the behavior of different socioeconomic groups without providing concrete examples or deeper analysis. To reach a higher band, ensure each paragraph focuses on a single, well-supported idea that directly links back to the prompt's core question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression between sentences is sometimes disjointed. While you use some cohesive devices like 'On the other hand' and 'furthermore,' their usage is occasionally mechanical or misused, such as starting a sentence with 'furthermore' to introduce a contradictory point. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where the connection between the 'economic barrier' and 'over reliance' is abrupt. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'affluent,' 'echelons,' and 'contemporary.' However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'impertinent' (which means irrelevant, though you likely meant 'important'), 'wielder of golden heart,' and 'belonging from a affluent background.' These errors occasionally impede the precision of your argument. To improve, focus on learning the correct collocations for the vocabulary you use and ensure you are using words in their correct context rather than relying on direct translations or slightly misused synonyms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'people of affluent background has'), missing articles, and punctuation errors. Some sentences are overly long and lack clear structure, which makes them difficult to follow. While these errors do not completely prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to lower the score. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement and article usage would help you achieve a higher level of accuracy.
