IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In the contemporary society, helping others have emerged as a highly debated issue. A segment of people strongly believes that affluent people should help the poor people, while others oppose this notion. This essay will critically examine the both perspectives. I strongly believe that rich society has the opportunity to help others, as it offers a multitude of significant advantages.
To commence with, a compelling reason supporting my view point is that wealthy people can establish educational institutions. when rich individuals build school they become capable of helping the learners that are not financialy strong, Moreover, this not only enables them to help by giving free education to learner who are deserving but also give food, build shelter and help in basic needs. For instance, A fifty two years old man develop institutions to education among needy persons. This example vividly illustrates how helping the needy person can help in society by reducing poverty.
Another noteworthy justification is that they can create jobs by starting businesses,. This facilitates individuals to help others more efficiently and accomplish superior outcomes. Additionally, by creating jobs helps to fight poverty. For instance, A prosperous man establish a firm which opens a large amount of jobs for the individuals who are jobless. Therefore, this reinforces the argument that helping others is very beneficial for society
To conclude, although it is argued by some that helping others may result in certain drawbacks. I firmly believe that helping others offers far more benefits. This is primarily because helping others eliminate poverty,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The essay addresses the prompt by taking a clear position, but the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide two main arguments—educational institutions and job creation—the supporting examples are vague and lack specific detail. For instance, mentioning a 'fifty two years old man' is not a concrete or verifiable example that strengthens your argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting points are fully extended with more logical depth rather than just repeating the core idea. The conclusion is also incomplete, ending abruptly mid-sentence, which affects the overall task completion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a basic attempt at logical progression. You use some cohesive devices like 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'Another noteworthy justification'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, and the abrupt ending of the essay significantly disrupts the flow and coherence of the final paragraph. Improving the transition between sentences and ensuring a complete, well-structured conclusion would greatly enhance the readability of your work.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your main points. You use some relevant topic-specific terms like 'affluent', 'educational institutions', and 'poverty'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and minor collocation errors, such as 'rich society' (should be 'the wealthy' or 'affluent individuals') and 'develop institutions to education' (should be 'develop institutions to provide education'). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, and you rely on repetitive phrasing. Expanding your range of synonyms and focusing on more precise word choices will help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('helping others have emerged'), article usage ('the poor people'), and punctuation errors. Some sentences are also structurally incomplete or awkward, such as 'when rich individuals build school they become capable of helping the learners that are not financialy strong'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would be highly beneficial.
