IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Being rich is previlage and gives individual a power and fame that encourage to help other in need. Lots of money can leverage the various factors to enable the person to donate or build the organizations to offer support in need. I agree with statement that being wealthy is major factor that enables to help other individuals. Wealth gives a reach to deeper and broader areas of society where others are not able to provide without enough funds and fame. Also, money could fund the bigger and costly projects that is essential to the individuals that only can be done by rich one in society.

Firstly, People with big chunk of money has contacts and reach to higher individuals in society that can be used to encourage the other rich families to join the opportunity to support others who is under previlage. Rich people can build broad infrastructure that could cover lager chunk of people in society. In instance, Reliance industry in India provides support to one district in Gujarat to the people that need funds for the college education. With being wealthy they also bring many sportsmens and local landlord to support in mutual cause that increase the reach in other districts and expand their cause to next level.

Secondly, wealth is also essential key part to support someone who need help that requires larger sum of equity and advance infrastructures. To cure diseses that is rare and comes with costly medications and high end proffesional that is not easily accessed by poor people. Wealthy can only provides this higher end of cost to individuals. In example, Tata charities provides organ transpants in Gurgaon city that help poor people. Organ transpant is very expensive and requires the spealists to operate which all provided freely to the public in need that only can supported by rich people like Ratan Tata.

In end, money bring the all instruments together that can make support easy and it also will not affect rich individual with enormous wealth. To help someone in society very end component is money which is key part and readily available to the wealthy ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by arguing that wealth provides the necessary resources and influence to help others. The position is clear throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive, and the examples, while relevant, are explained in a way that lacks depth. The essay tends to over-generalise the role of wealthy individuals in society. To reach a higher band, you should focus on exploring the nuances of the argument—perhaps by acknowledging counter-arguments or discussing the limitations of wealth in solving societal issues—rather than simply restating that money is the 'key part' in every paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'In instance' (should be 'For instance') and 'In end' (should be 'In conclusion'). Additionally, some referencing is unclear, such as 'that only can be done by rich one in society,' where the pronoun reference is imprecise. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words would help the flow of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and sophistication. There are several instances of non-standard word choices or collocations, such as 'previlage' (spelling error: privilege), 'under previlage' (underprivileged), 'larger chunk of people' (a large segment of the population), and 'sum of equity' (financial resources). While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited, and the frequent spelling errors (e.g., 'diseses', 'proffesional', 'transpants', 'spealists') occasionally distract the reader, though they do not impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('People... has', 'wealthy can only provides'), missing articles ('in society', 'to individuals'), and awkward phrasing ('that only can supported by rich people'). While the meaning is usually understandable, these persistent errors indicate a lack of control over complex structures. To improve, focus on basic grammatical accuracy, particularly subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, before attempting more complex sentence patterns.
