IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many people think that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the chance to help others.
I personally believe that when you are rich you have a break to help others because it is difficult to help others if you are not wealthy enough. You only have enough resources to run your circle.
Overall, we should try to help others in every situation either we are rich or not but, if we are rich we have an extra chance to support others out of the way. We can donate the extra money in terms of donation or aid. Moreover if we are rich, we do not need to be worried about our expenses. We can spend on both sides. Rich people got the chance to assist the other society members which can play positive role in a longer run.
On the other hand, if someone is poor, it will be difficult for him to meet the both ends and consequently he can not help his fellows. Being poor also brings other tensions as well, for example he will be worried about the bread and butter of his family. He will look for someone else to help him out. Indirectly some rich one to help him. Being poor you will only look for someone's assistance and you will be dependent on someone. Contrary to it if you are rich you can live an independent life and also help grow members of entire group or town.
I personally agree that being rich gives you the greatest advantage to help out the other members of the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position that wealth facilitates helping others. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive. While you mention that wealth allows for donations and financial independence, the arguments could be more nuanced. For instance, you could explore how non-monetary help (time, expertise) is also valuable, which would provide a more balanced and sophisticated discussion. The ideas are relevant, but the explanation of why wealth is the 'most' important factor remains slightly underdeveloped, as you focus more on the contrast between being rich and poor rather than fully justifying the 'most important' aspect of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'Consequently' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'support others out of the way' or 'spend on both sides', which makes the logical progression feel a bit mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the idea of being rich and the description of being poor could be smoother to better highlight the contrast you are aiming for.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on basic phrases like 'help others', 'rich', and 'poor' throughout the text. There are some instances of unnatural collocations, such as 'have a break to help others' and 'bread and butter of his family', which is an idiom used slightly out of context here. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more academic vocabulary and precise collocations related to social responsibility, philanthropy, and financial stability.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'either we are rich or not' (should be 'whether we are rich or not'), 'meet the both ends' (should be 'make ends meet'), and 'some rich one to help him' (fragmented sentence). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence completeness will improve your accuracy.
