IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Some people believe that the most crucial things about being wealthy is that they have opportunity to assist others. I strongly agree that the ability to help others is one of the most significant advantage of being wealthy, although financial security and personal freedom are also important.
The primary reason that why I agree with this notion is that wealthy people give financial capacity to make a meaningful difference in others lives. Wealthy people have resources beyond their basic needs. So they donate to charities, fund education support healthcare or help disadvantageous communities. As this improve the quality of life and improve career opportunities they otherwise would not have. For instance, a wealthy entrepreneur could establish scholarships for students for low income families. In addition

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response is significantly under-length, containing only 125 words, which is well below the 250-word minimum requirement. This severely impacts the development of the argument. While you state a clear position in the introduction, the body paragraph is incomplete and ends abruptly mid-sentence. Because the essay is not fully developed and fails to meet the length requirement, it cannot adequately address all parts of the task. To improve, you must ensure you provide a full introduction, at least two well-developed body paragraphs with supporting examples, and a clear conclusion to meet the word count and depth expectations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay shows some attempt at logical organization, such as using 'The primary reason' to introduce a point. However, the abrupt ending and the lack of a concluding paragraph make the overall structure feel incomplete. Cohesive devices are used, but the flow is interrupted by the unfinished nature of the text. To reach a higher band, you need to ensure that ideas are fully developed within paragraphs and that the essay has a clear, logical progression from introduction to a final summary or conclusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally appropriate for the topic, with terms like 'financial capacity', 'meaningful difference', and 'entrepreneur'. However, there are some inaccuracies, such as 'disadvantageous communities' (should be 'disadvantaged') and 'significant advantage' (should be plural 'advantages'). The range of vocabulary is limited due to the short length of the response. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are several grammatical errors that affect the clarity of your writing. For example, 'the most crucial things... is' should be 'the most crucial thing... is', and 'the primary reason that why' is redundant. There are also issues with missing articles and incorrect verb forms, such as 'As this improve' (should be 'As this improves'). While you attempt some complex structures, the frequency of errors is noticeable. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
