IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

A wealthy person has the ability to help others in monetary terms and I also think it is one of the crucial thing about being rich.

A person who has abundance of resources has both the opportunity and ability to donate some of his belongings to other needy persons. Being rich doesn't mean one has to show off his riches to other people, being humble constitutes richness in a person. When someone gets rich, it comes with a moral obligation to do virtuous things for the society.

A prosperous person can come forward with the intend to give back some of his wealth to the society through the act of donation. There are many ways through which an affluent person can help others. To illustrate, we can learn a great deal from Mr. Ratan Tata, one of the most richest men in India. He donated his earnings for the well beings of his countrymen. His important contribution would be the Tata Memorial Hospital, which gives treatment to poor people at a very low cost or sometimes for free. He donated his money in various social campaigns including social awareness about hygiene, vocational education and also by giving scholarships to poor, meritorious students so that they can pursue their desired career paths. It is estimated that almost 90% of his wealth was donated to the cause of mankind, the reason why people of India still remembers him even after his death.

On the other hand, Vijay Maliha, another rich person from the same country showed off his wealth whenever he can by arranging lavish parties for wealthiest people. He led a flamboyant life style and hardly donated to greater cause. In the end, he evaded his motherland for being accused of fraud and people disregard him as a rich person for the reason that all of his earnings were through deception and forgery.

It is obvious that richness doesn't come from only earning huge amounts of wealth, it comes from the opportunity to assist needy people of the society and this is one of the most important things a wealthy person should possess.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that helping others is a crucial aspect of wealth. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the contrast between Ratan Tata and Vijay Mallya, which provides a strong, illustrative argument. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the introduction could be more robust, and the conclusion could more explicitly synthesize the arguments rather than simply restating the thesis. However, the response is well-focused and effectively supports the main argument with relevant examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central focus, moving from the definition of wealth to a positive example, a contrasting negative example, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices such as 'To illustrate', 'On the other hand', and 'In the end' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The flow is generally smooth, though some transitions between sentences could be slightly more sophisticated to enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some precision, such as 'moral obligation', 'virtuous', 'flamboyant', and 'deception'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'evaded his motherland' (should be 'fled') and 'most richest' (a grammatical error that also impacts lexical precision). While the range is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly, it lacks the consistent flexibility and sophisticated control required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While there is an attempt at complex sentences, there are persistent errors that slightly distract the reader. Examples include 'one of the crucial thing' (should be 'things'), 'most richest' (superlative error), 'well beings' (should be 'well-being'), and 'remembers him' (subject-verb agreement error with 'people'). Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the communication remains effective throughout the response.
