IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
A wealthy person has the ability to help others in monetary terms and I also think it is one of the crucial things about being rich.
A person who has abundance of resources has both the opportunity and ability to donate some of his belongings to other needy persons. Being rich doesn't mean one has to show off his riches to other people, , being humble constitutes richness in a person. When someone gets rich, it comes with a moral obligation to do virtuous things for the society.
A prosperous person can come forward with the intend to give back some of his wealth to the society through the act of donation. There are many ways through which an affluent person can help others. To illustrate, we can learn a great deal from Mr. Ratan Tata, one of the most richest men in India. He donated his earnings for the well-being of his countrymen. His important contribution would be the Tata Memorial Hospital, which gives treatment to poor people at a very low cost or sometimes for free. He donated his money in various social campaigns including social awareness about hygiene, vocational education and also by giving scholarships to poor, meritorious students so that they can pursue their desired career paths. It is estimated that almost 90% of his wealth was donated to the cause of mankind, the reason why people of India still remember him even after his death.
On the other hand, Vijay Maliha, another rich person from the same country showed off his wealth whenever he could by arranging lavish parties for the wealthiest people. He led a flamboyant lifestyle and hardly donated to a greater cause. In the end, he fled his motherland for being accused of fraud and people disregard him as a rich person for the reason that all of his earnings were through deception and forgery.
It is obvious that richness doesn't come from only earning huge amounts of wealth, it comes from the opportunity to assist the needy people of the society and this is one of the most important things a wealthy person should possess.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed the prompt by taking a clear position that helping others is a crucial aspect of being wealthy. You support your argument with a relevant, well-developed example of Ratan Tata and a contrasting example of Vijay Mallya. The ideas are extended logically, and your position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that your introduction provides a more comprehensive overview of the points you intend to discuss, rather than just stating your opinion. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, but could be slightly more nuanced to reflect the complexity of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central focus, and you use cohesive devices such as 'To illustrate,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In the end' to link your points effectively. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with punctuation, such as the double comma in the second paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. To improve, try to vary your linking words further and ensure that referencing between sentences is consistently smooth.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'moral obligation,' 'virtuous things,' 'meritorious students,' and 'flamboyant lifestyle' show a good command of language. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'one of the most richest' (a double superlative error) and 'intend' instead of 'intent.' While you use some less common items, the overall range is adequate rather than highly sophisticated. Focusing on more precise collocations and avoiding grammatical errors in word forms will help you move into the higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear and error-free, there are recurring grammatical slips. For example, 'one of the most richest' is incorrect, and there are minor issues with article usage and prepositions (e.g., 'for being accused' should be 'due to being accused'). Your control of punctuation is generally good, though the double comma in the second paragraph is a distraction. To improve, focus on eliminating these small errors and incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence forms, such as conditional clauses or passive voice, to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
