IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that the most important thing about being rich is having the opportunity to help other people. I strongly agree with this view because wealthy people have fewer financial difficulties and are therefore in a better position to support those who are in need.

The main reason why I agree with this view is that rich people can use their money to improve the lives of less fortunate people. For example, they can donate money to orphanages and old-age homes or provide financial support for education and food. There are many people who cannot afford basic necessities, and even a small part of a wealthy person's income could make a significant difference to them. Moreover, rich individuals can provide scholarships to talented students from poor families, giving them an opportunity to receive a good education and build a better future.

Another reason is that wealthy people can help society on a larger scale. Instead of only donating money, they can invest in businesses and create employment opportunities. This can provide a regular source of income for many families and may help them become financially independent. Wealthy individuals can also fund hospitals, schools and charitable organizations. Although being rich certainly provides personal advantages, such as a comfortable lifestyle and financial security, using wealth to benefit other people can have a much wider and more meaningful impact.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that the opportunity to help others is one of the most important benefits of being wealthy. While money can provide personal comfort, its value becomes much greater when it is also used to improve the lives of others.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response fully addresses the prompt by taking a clear position and supporting it with relevant, well-developed arguments. You have explored both the direct impact of wealth (charity) and the indirect impact (job creation and economic stability), which demonstrates a thoughtful approach to the topic. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the ideas are extended logically. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a brief counter-argument or a more nuanced discussion about whether this is the 'most' important thing compared to other potential benefits of wealth, such as personal freedom or influence, to show a deeper level of critical analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'The main reason why,' 'Moreover,' and 'Although.' The transition between the personal benefits of wealth and the societal benefits is handled well. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent. To improve, ensure that the connection between sentences is always natural; occasionally, the use of linking words feels slightly formulaic, but this does not impede the flow of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'less fortunate people,' 'financially independent,' and 'meaningful impact' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is appropriate and clear, it is generally standard. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items or idiomatic collocations. For example, instead of 'improve the lives,' you might use 'alleviate the plight of' or 'foster socioeconomic development.' The current range is adequate for the task but lacks the 'skilful use of uncommon items' required for the highest bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

Your control of grammar is strong, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively, such as the use of 'Although' clauses and conditional-like structures ('If...'). Punctuation is generally accurate, and your sentence construction is clear. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to introduce a wider variety of complex structures, such as inversion or more sophisticated passive constructions, and ensure that your sentence variety is consistently high throughout the entire piece.
