IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

I firmly subscribe to the view that being rich is very important in life because we has many opportunities and do anything what we want but I think a rich person should help poor people instead of insult them.

The most persuasive argument in favor of this view is that being rich is a good thing but we should we take it positive. As a rich person, we take decisions by own and be independent. A rich person has responsibility to take care other people in every difficult situation or hep them.

A further point worthy of consideration is that a wealthy person should

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which severely impacts the ability to develop ideas. The essay is incomplete, ending abruptly in the second paragraph. While you state a position in the introduction, the lack of development means the task is only partially addressed. To improve, you must ensure you write at least 250 words and provide fully supported arguments for each point mentioned. Currently, the ideas are too brief and lack the necessary depth and examples required for an academic essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks a clear structure due to its incomplete nature. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the text cuts off mid-sentence, preventing a logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are minimal, and the flow between the introduction and the body paragraph is disjointed. To achieve a higher score, you need to use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') to connect your sentences and paragraphs, and ensure your essay has a clear introduction, body paragraphs with supporting evidence, and a concluding summary.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'being rich' and 'good thing' are simplistic and lack the precision expected in an academic context. There are also errors in word choice, such as 'instead of insult them' (should be 'instead of insulting them'). To improve, you should aim to use more sophisticated vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'financial prosperity', 'altruism', or 'social responsibility', and focus on correct word forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The text contains several grammatical errors that impede clarity. For example, 'we has many opportunities' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'take decisions by own' (incorrect preposition/pronoun usage). The sentence structures are mostly simple, with limited attempts at complex sentences. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement, correct preposition usage, and incorporating a variety of complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or conditional sentences, while ensuring they are grammatically accurate.
