IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people believe that being rich gives you the most significant opportunity of helping others. I agree with the statement because it provides a systematic change and moral duty.

People who fall in the category of wealthy class are capable of bringing change in the society because of the resources and connections they have. Money plays an important role in all aspects of life as it can help build hospitals, schools and feed hungry people which can change society and improve the standard of living. It is a moral obligation on people that when they are in a position to help someone either financially or emotionally, they should.

Some people disagree that if someone becomes rich due to their hard work, it is not an obligation to help others and should not be looked down upon. Wealthy people tend not to support the society because it helps them gain more money which makes their life easy by giving them freedom of choice and to work on personal hobbies rather than spending time working. Money gives people the ability to spend more quality time with their family which is not possible when you are in pursuit of money for basic needs.

I agree that elite people should spend a part of their wealth to help others as that will not create a division between different classes in the society. Moreover, it helps build a better system with the improvement of basic necessities due to donations done by rich people. Furthermore, large amount of donations have more impact in the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have identified the core argument regarding the moral obligation of the wealthy to assist others. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The second paragraph introduces the counter-argument, but it is slightly underdeveloped and lacks a strong transition to explain why this perspective is ultimately rejected. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph provides a more thorough exploration of the 'why' and 'how' behind your claims, rather than just stating them. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, but could be more impactful by synthesizing the main points rather than simply restating them.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In addition', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between the counter-argument and your own position could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is abrupt. Improving the use of referencing (e.g., using 'this perspective' or 'such actions' to refer back to previous ideas) would enhance the overall cohesion and make the progression of ideas feel more natural and sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'systematic change', 'moral obligation', and 'pursuit of money'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'fall in the category of wealthy class' (better: 'the wealthy' or 'the affluent') and 'donations done by rich people' (better: 'donations made by the wealthy'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items to convey your ideas with greater nuance and sophistication, moving beyond basic descriptive language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'It is a moral obligation on people that when they are in a position to help someone... they should' (which is slightly wordy) and 'large amount of donations have' (should be 'a large amount of... has'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and refining complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free and contribute to a more polished academic tone.
