IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this day and age, it is argued that advantage of being rich is having the opportunity to help others. I strongly agree with this viewpoint and my inclination will be justified in the following paragraphs.

To commence with, there are various reasons that why I agree with this notion. The most prominent is rich people can provide financial assistance to those who are struggling. They can donate money to charities, provide scholarships to poor students, and support families who cannot afford basic necessities. For example, a wealthy person can fund the education of the talented students from low-income families. This can give them better career opportunities and help them become financially independent in the future.

Moreover, wealthy individuals can use their money to improve society as a whole. They can invest in hospitals, schools and other community projects. Although being rich can provide personal benefits such as a comfortable lifestyle and financial security, helping others can bring greater satisfaction and create a positive impact on society. Therefore, using wealth for social welfare is improve meaningful than spending it only on personal luxuries. Furthermore, helping others bring cooperation between dwellers and reduce bias between rich and poor people which may help to increase the economy of the country.

In conclusion, I completely agree that the opportunity to help others is one of the most important benefits of being rich. Wealthy people can improve the lives of individuals and contribute to society by using their money in a responsible and helpful way.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments are relevant, focusing on financial assistance and societal improvement. However, the development is somewhat limited; while the ideas are clear, they could be extended with more nuanced analysis or specific real-world examples to reach a higher band. The conclusion reinforces the position well. The essay is balanced and directly answers the 'to what extent' question by consistently supporting the importance of helping others as a primary benefit of wealth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother in places. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical, and the essay is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'financial assistance', 'social welfare', and 'financially independent'. However, there is a lack of more sophisticated or 'less common' lexical items that would demonstrate a wider range. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 'is improve meaningful', which is grammatically incorrect and awkward. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and a broader range of academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'there are various reasons that why I agree' (redundant 'that') and 'helping others bring cooperation' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, 'is improve meaningful' is a significant error that disrupts the sentence structure. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to subject-verb agreement and sentence construction is needed.
