IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
A rich person can do anything that a normal person is not capable of doing. Some people believe that, after one becomes rich, the most crucial thing that the person can do is to help others. I agree that, given the opportunity to help others after becoming rich is very important, both in terms of need and opportunities.
To begin with, the most important and valuable thing a rich person can do is donate. Many rich people have become philanthropists after becoming rich and have helped communities by generous and kept themselves anonymous. For example, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates. These two big billionaires have made contributions to the society by helping with people in need with disease eradications, education and so on. Warren Buffett directly funds the charity of Bill Gated so help can reach to more people around the world.
Moreover, being able to help others in terms of health and education important, helping others become successful by giving them guidance to become one is another responsibility. Assisting people by providing mentorship is and guidance cannot only benefit one but can help society too. For example funding agricultural innovation ideas can benefit villages and can improve income of villagers significantly. Providing farmers by lending them unique and advanced farming tools at reasonable price and also providing free agricultural knowledge and how to sell better can improve their daily income and they can live better life.
To conclude, helping others is important in both ways by donating to charities which can reach out to people around the world in need and also by helping people to grow in their life by opening doors for them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of the idea that helping others is the most important aspect of being wealthy. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, as well as the concept of agricultural mentorship. However, the development is somewhat limited; while the points are clear, they could be expanded with more depth regarding why this is the 'most' important thing compared to other potential benefits of wealth, such as personal security or influence. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, maintaining a consistent position throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the phrasing 'helping others become successful by giving them guidance to become one', which is slightly repetitive and lacks smooth connectivity to the previous sentence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'philanthropists' and 'disease eradications'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and awkward collocations, such as 'helping with people in need' (should be 'helping people in need') and 'funding the charity of Bill Gated' (typo). The range is sufficient to discuss the topic, but lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'given the opportunity to help others after becoming rich is very important' (missing subject/structure error) and 'mentorship is and guidance' (redundant conjunction). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings that hinder the flow. The writer demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but the frequency of minor errors prevents a higher score.
