IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent years, there has been considerable debate about whether the most important advantage of being wealthy is having the opportunity to help others. I strongly agree that although wealth provides several benefits, the ability to support those in need is one of its most significant advantages.

The primary reason is that, rich people have all the facilities and power to help the people in need. With the money and fame, they can help others with medical facilities, providing them with food and shelter. Moreover, these rich people can collect charity because people are often more willing to contribute to campaigns led by well-known personalities. For example, a famous businessman can use his public influence to collect donations and provide essential supplies to people affected by natural disasters. Therefore, being wealthy enables individuals to make a significant difference in the lives of disadvantaged people.

On the other hand, being wealthy can provide individuals with numerous personal benefits, such as a comfortable lifestyle, better education and greater financial security. Rich people can afford luxurious houses, travel to different countries and provide high-quality education for their children. However, I believe that using wealth to improve the lives of others is more valuable than spending it solely on personal luxuries. This is because material possessions may provide temporary satisfaction, whereas helping disadvantaged people can create a lasting positive impact on society. For instance, wealthy individuals who invest in schools, hospitals or charitable organizations can improve the quality of life of hundreds or even thousands of people.

In conclusion, although being wealthy offers numerous personal advantages, I strongly believe that the opportunity to help others is one of the most significant benefits of wealth. By using their financial resources and influence to support those in need, wealthy individuals can make a lasting and meaningful contribution to society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, maintaining a clear and consistent position throughout. The argument is well-developed, with the first body paragraph focusing on the practical utility of wealth for altruism, and the second paragraph providing a balanced view by acknowledging personal benefits before refuting their ultimate importance. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of natural disasters and investment in public infrastructure. The response effectively balances the 'to what extent' requirement by acknowledging personal advantages while firmly arguing that the societal impact is the most significant aspect of wealth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the progression of ideas is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'The primary reason is that', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different facets of the argument. The flow of information is natural, and referencing is clear throughout the text, making the essay easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'disadvantaged people', 'charitable organizations', 'financial security', and 'public influence'. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and fits the context well, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or 'less common' lexical items that would push the score into the 8.0+ range. However, there are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication, and the tone remains formal and academic throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is consistent control over grammar and punctuation, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Complex structures, such as the use of 'although' clauses and conditional-style reasoning, are handled well. There are very few minor slips, such as the unnecessary comma in 'the primary reason is that, rich people', but these are rare and do not interfere with the clarity of the message. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is strong.
