IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

some people believe that the most important advantage of being rich is having the opportunity to help others. I largely agree with this view because wealth can provide people with the means to improve the lives of others, although it also offers several personal benefits.

firstly, wealthy people are in a strong position to support those who are less fortunate. They can donate money to charities, provide scholarships, build schools and hospitals, or support people affected by natural disasters. For example, a successful businessperson can fund educational programmes for poor children, giving them opportunities that they might otherwise never have. In this way, wealth can be used not only for personal comfort but also to improve the lives of others. that way the child is poor to the other child.

Nevertheless, being rich has several other advantages that should not be ignored. Wealth can provide a comfortable and secure lifestyle, allowing people to afford better healthcare, education and housing. It can also give individuals greater freedom to pursue their interests, travel and spend more time with their families. Moreover, wealthy people can invest in businesses and create employment opportunities, indirectly helping society. we were used this in my board.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that the ability to help others is one of the greatest benefits of being rich. Nevertheless, financial security, personal freedom and the ability to create opportunities for others are also significant advantages. Ultimately, the value of wealth depends largely on how responsibly and generously it is used.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt well, clearly stating a position of partial agreement. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly the discussion on the societal benefits of wealth. However, the development in the first paragraph is slightly hampered by the final sentence, 'that way the child is poor to the other child,' which is unclear and lacks logical connection to the preceding argument. Despite this minor lapse, the essay covers all parts of the task and maintains a consistent position throughout, which aligns with the requirements for a Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the primary argument from the counter-arguments. Cohesive devices such as 'firstly,' 'nevertheless,' 'moreover,' and 'in conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, the sentence 'we were used this in my board' in the second paragraph is completely disconnected from the context and disrupts the logical progression of the paragraph. This is a minor issue, but it prevents a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some precision. Phrases like 'less fortunate,' 'financial security,' and 'create employment opportunities' demonstrate a good range. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though the essay relies on fairly standard academic language. The error in the second paragraph ('we were used this in my board') is a significant lexical and grammatical lapse that detracts from the overall quality. However, the majority of the vocabulary is accurate and used in appropriate contexts, meeting the criteria for a Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically sound, such as 'They can donate money to charities, provide scholarships, build schools and hospitals.' However, there are a few notable errors, such as the confusing final sentence of the first paragraph and the irrelevant, grammatically incorrect sentence in the second paragraph. These errors do not impede overall communication, but they indicate a lack of consistent control over complex structures. Therefore, the response sits comfortably within the Band 6 range.
