IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Some people believe that the most important benefit of being wealthy is having the opportunity to help others. I largely agree with this view because rich people can make a significant difference to society, although wealth also provides important personal benefits.

Firstly, wealthy individuals are in a much better position to support people who are less fortunate. They can donate money to charities, provide scholarships for poor students, or contribute to hospitals and other public services. For example, a successful businessperson may use part of their wealth to build a school in a disadvantaged area, giving children access to better education. In this way, being rich can provide people with the ability to improve the lives of others on a large scale. Moreover, helping others can give wealthy people a sense of purpose and satisfaction that cannot always be achieved through material possessions.

However, I do not believe that helping others is the only important advantage of being rich. Financial security can greatly improve an individual's quality of life. Wealth allows people to afford comfortable housing, good healthcare, high-quality education and enjoyable experiences. It also gives them greater freedom to choose their careers and spend more time with their families rather than working simply to meet basic needs. Therefore, personal security and freedom are also significant benefits of having substantial financial resources.

In conclusion, I agree that one of the greatest advantages of being wealthy is the opportunity to help others, particularly because rich people can support society in meaningful ways. Nevertheless, I believe that personal freedom, security and a better quality of life are equally important benefits of wealth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, with specific examples provided for both the altruistic benefits of wealth (donating to charities, building schools) and the personal benefits (financial security, quality of life). The balance between these two perspectives is handled well, ensuring the argument is nuanced rather than one-sided. The conclusion effectively synthesises the main points, confirming your stance that while helping others is a primary benefit, personal advantages are equally significant.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the altruistic perspective and the personal perspective is smooth, facilitated by the use of the contrastive linker 'However'. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'In this way', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct purpose in the overall structure of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases such as 'less fortunate', 'disadvantaged area', 'material possessions', and 'substantial financial resources' are used accurately and appropriately. The language is natural and conveys your meaning clearly. While the vocabulary is effective and fits the context well, it could be elevated further by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions to reach the highest band levels, but it is certainly strong for a high-level response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional-like structures ('if... then' implied) and subordinate clauses ('although wealth also provides...', 'rather than working simply to...'). The grammar is highly accurate, with no significant errors that impede communication. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and you demonstrate good control over complex grammatical forms, which is consistent with a high band score.
