IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people say that the most important thing about being rich is having the opportunity to help others. I agree with this statement to a large extent because wealthy people can support poor people and make a positive difference in society. However, I also believe that being rich has other important benefits.
One important reason why I agree is that rich people have more opportunities to help others. They can give money to poor families, donate to charities and support people who cannot afford basic needs. For instance, a wealthy person can provide food, education and medical treatment to people who are struggling financially. In this way, their wealth can improve the lives of many people.
On the other hand, I believe that being rich is not only important because of helping others. Wealth can also provide a person with a comfortable and secure life. Rich people can afford a good house, better education and proper medical treatment for themselves and their families. Moreover, they can use their money to start a business or achieve their personal goals. For example, a person with enough money can provide a better future for their children and also save money for difficult times.
In conclusion, I agree that one of the most important benefits of being rich is having the opportunity to help others. However, I believe that wealth is also important because it gives people security, comfort and better opportunities in their own lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The essay addresses the prompt by discussing the importance of helping others while acknowledging personal benefits of wealth. However, the response is 242 words, failing to meet the 250-word minimum requirement. This under-length significantly impacts the development of ideas, which remain somewhat superficial. While the position is clear, the arguments could be more extensively supported with specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The conclusion is brief and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented in the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. However, the range of cohesive devices is somewhat limited, and the transitions between paragraphs could be more sophisticated to improve the overall flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and sophistication. The student relies on basic terms like 'good', 'important', and 'help', which are repeated frequently. While the meaning is always clear, there is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions that would demonstrate a higher level of proficiency. To improve, the student should aim to use more precise synonyms and collocations to convey their ideas with greater nuance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a good level of grammatical control. Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is generally correct. The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'In this way, their wealth can improve the lives of many people.' While there are no major errors that impede communication, the range of structures is somewhat limited. Incorporating more varied complex sentence forms, such as conditional clauses or passive voice, would enhance the grammatical range.
