IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Some argue that the primary benefit of being wealthy is having an oppurtunity to help others. Though financial wealth can help others. I mostly disagree with this argument of being the most important. I believe that financial security and the freedom to make personal choices are more significant benefits of being rich.
One of the main advantages of wealth is the financial security it provides. People with substantial savings and assets are better able to deal with unexpected expenses, such as medical bills, home repairs or periods of unemployment. They are also less likely to experience serious financial stress because they have sufficient resources to cope with difficult circumstances. For example, a wealthy individual who loses their job can continue to afford essential expenses while searching for another position. Therefore, the ability to maintain a stable and secure life is arguably a more fundamental benefit of wealth than the opportunity to help others.
Another important advantage is that wealth gives people greater freedom to make personal and professional choices. Those who are financially independent can choose a career based on their interests rather than simply selecting the highest-paying job. They may also have more opportunities to travel, pursue further education, start a business or spend time with their families. Wealth can certainly be used to benefit other people, through charitable donations, scholarships or community projects, and this can have a significant positive impact on society. However, helping others is ultimately a personal choice, whereas financial independence and freedom are direct benefits that wealth can provide to the individual.
In conclusion, although being rich gives people an excellent opportunity to support others, I do not believe that this is the most important aspect of wealth. Financial security and the freedom to make important life choices are, in my view, more significant advantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses the prompt by taking a clear position and supporting it with relevant arguments. You have effectively balanced the discussion by acknowledging the opposing view while maintaining a consistent stance that personal benefits like financial security and freedom are more significant. The ideas are well-developed, with specific examples such as medical bills and career choices provided to illustrate your points. The response is well-structured and directly answers the 'to what extent' component of the question, demonstrating a clear and logical progression of thought throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs, and a concise conclusion. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, and the progression of ideas is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'One of the main advantages', 'For example', 'Therefore', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, and the referencing is clear throughout. The flow of the text is natural and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic task. Phrases like 'financial security', 'unexpected expenses', 'financially independent', and 'fundamental benefit' show a strong command of topic-specific language. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items to reach the highest band. There is one minor spelling error ('oppurtunity'), but this does not impede communication. Overall, the lexical range is sufficient to convey your ideas with precision and clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'Those who are financially independent can choose...', 'Although being rich gives people...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and grammar is strong. There is a minor punctuation error in the first paragraph where a sentence fragment occurs ('Though financial wealth can help others. I mostly disagree...'), but this is a rare slip. Your grammatical control is consistent, and the structures used are varied enough to support a high band score.
