IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some people believe that the greatest advantage of being wealthy is having the ability to help others. While i totally agree with that wealth is the kind of fortune by which one can help the needy but on the other hand being wealthy also provides personal protection and freedom.

On the one hand , being wealthy can help the needy people in many ways such as they can donate their money in charities which can help the poors. they can also give their money to poor people for their houseuse. their are many charities and foundations to which the wealthy people can donate. These donations are very helpful for the poor and needy people. they can also start a school for the poor children by which they can get free education and later, they can help their families financially.

On the other hand wealthy people also have the benefits for themselves such as financial security and freedom. they can have good house, good food and expensive cars they enjoy their lives not the same way poor and needy people enjoy .they also have alot freedom such as they can have plenty of free time which they can spend with their families

Therefore, although helping others is a valuable advantage of being wealthy but i guess that is not necessarily the most important one.

In conclusion, i agree with that having money gives an excellent opportunity to help the poor and needy ones but i think having the personal security and freedom is also important.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the altruistic potential of wealth and the personal benefits of financial security. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For example, the mention of 'houseuse' is unclear, and the explanation of how wealth provides freedom is repetitive. While a position is stated, the argument lacks depth and nuance. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or logical reasoning to support your claims rather than listing general benefits. The conclusion is a bit weak as it simply restates the prompt without adding a final synthesis or insight.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive. Phrases like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' are used correctly, but the transitions between sentences within paragraphs are sometimes abrupt. For instance, the jump from discussing charities to starting a school lacks a smooth logical connector. Additionally, there are issues with punctuation, such as spaces before commas, which detracts from the overall flow and professional presentation of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on basic terms like 'good house', 'good food', and 'poor people' repeatedly. There is an attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'charities' and 'foundations', but the range is limited. Word choice errors, such as 'houseuse' (likely meaning housing) and the misuse of 'fortune' in the introduction, slightly impede clarity. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated synonyms and collocations to express your ideas more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'their are many charities'), missing articles, and incorrect capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before commas and periods. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. You should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring that your sentence structures are varied and correctly punctuated.
