IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that being rich enables one to help others. While it is true that helping others is important, it is more important for someone who is rich. I agree with this view because there are thousands of people who are in need of help in society, and helping others can bring peace and happiness for everyone.

One of the main reasons I agree with is that there are a lot of people, such as homeless people, hungry people, and jobless individuals, who are in need of help. This is because there is no balance in society. Rich people are getting richer, and poor people are barely getting by. So it is very important that the rich should help the poor and needy people whenever they can because they have more than they need. For example, if someone has an abundance of money and they don't need that much money to survive, then they can give some away to the needy people amongst them. As a result, the rich person can still be rich, and the people in need can survive as well.

Another important reason is that giving or helping the poor can bring peace and happiness for everyone. This means that helping others can bring peace of mind to the rich person, and being helped by the rich can bring happiness to the people in need. For example, there have been cases around the world where the rich person would donate or give away all his assets or money to the poor people just to be in peace. Therefore, the rich person can be in peace, and the poor can be happy as well.

In conclusion, although giving away everything a rich person is not very common, I believe that rich people have more opportunity to help others, which is more important. This is mainly because there are a lot of people who need help around us, and helping others can bring peace and happiness for everyone.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding social inequality and the psychological benefits of philanthropy are relevant and logically developed. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the idea that helping others brings 'peace and happiness' is restated in both the second and third paragraphs without significant new depth. To reach a higher band, you should aim to explore the nuance of the prompt—perhaps by discussing whether this is the 'most important' aspect of wealth compared to other potential uses, such as innovation or personal development. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, though it remains slightly simplistic in its phrasing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the main reasons,' 'For example,' and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel repetitive. For example, the phrase 'This means that' is used to explain points in a way that feels slightly formulaic. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this view,' 'these individuals') is more precise would enhance the overall flow and coherence of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'assets,' 'inequality,' and 'philanthropy' (implied). However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on basic descriptors such as 'rich people,' 'poor people,' and 'good.' To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and academic vocabulary. For instance, instead of repeating 'rich people,' you could use 'the affluent,' 'high-net-worth individuals,' or 'the wealthy.' Similarly, 'poor people' could be replaced with 'the underprivileged' or 'those living in poverty' to demonstrate a more advanced lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical issues. For example, 'giving away everything a rich person is not very common' is syntactically awkward. Additionally, there are minor errors in article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'bring peace and happiness for everyone' (should be 'to everyone'). While you attempt complex structures, they are not always error-free. To achieve a higher band, focus on increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences and refining your control over sentence construction to ensure greater precision and variety.
