Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The essay addresses the prompt by discussing the role of wealthy individuals in helping society. However, the position is not consistently clear throughout. The introduction states the essay will 'conclude the both views' rather than taking a clear stance, which is a requirement for a higher band. While the body paragraphs provide relevant points regarding philanthropy and the potential for dependency, the development is somewhat superficial. The ideas are relevant but lack the depth and specific examples needed to fully explore the 'extent' of the agreement. The conclusion attempts to offer a balanced view but remains somewhat vague in its final argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is present (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'On the other hand'), but they are used in a somewhat mechanical way. There are issues with referencing and logical flow; for instance, the transition between the benefits of philanthropy and the negative impacts of dependency is abrupt. The opening paragraph is also weak, failing to clearly outline the essay's direction or the writer's position, which affects the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range expected at higher bands. There are several instances of awkward phrasing or incorrect word choices, such as 'look up for handouts' instead of 'rely on handouts' and 'as a organization' instead of 'as an organization'. The range of vocabulary is limited, relying on basic terms like 'beneficial', 'help', and 'society'. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to express complex ideas more fluently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'if society start rely' (should be 'starts to rely'), 'those have strong academic background' (should be 'who have a strong academic background'), and 'are not be able to study' (should be 'are not able to study'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors in basic subject-verb agreement and sentence construction prevents the essay from reaching a higher band.
