IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is very well said that the rich has the most number of chances to help people around them. People with crazy amount of money can definitely help people in need.

It is believed that even people who are not rich and are from middle class families, help poor or needy people out of generosity because in the end it is all about the kindness they have. With so much of wealth, individuals can contribute to different organizations and NGOs who help animals and poor beings by giving shelter, food, clothes and basic medical facilities to them. By donating larger amount of money and having so much power in society, they can even influence others to do the same and can create free schools and build business opportunities for them which will make a lot of good to both of them. For example: If a rich man is offering jobs to skilled people who are not doing financially great, even he is making his impression and getting the advantage from the companies because nothing in this world comes with a free pass.

Nowadays, not all the families coming from strong generational wealth do anything like this. Some just spend on themselves buying airplanes, big mansions, expensive vacations and give a very little or nothing to the surroundings. Not that it is a bad way of living a life because it is their cash and they can spend it however they want to but there always should be a sense of belonging to the outside world also and by watching that they should know how capable they are to turn around things for the better.

To conclude, I agree the rich have the power and influence to change things.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt, but the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While you acknowledge the potential for the wealthy to help others, the argument lacks depth and specific examples. The second paragraph introduces a counter-argument about middle-class generosity, which is relevant but slightly distracts from the main focus on the wealthy. The third paragraph discusses the behavior of the wealthy, but the analysis remains superficial. To reach a higher band, you should provide more concrete, extended examples of how wealth facilitates societal change, rather than listing general activities like 'buying airplanes' or 'donating money'. The position is clear, but the supporting arguments need more logical expansion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For instance, the transition between the idea of middle-class generosity and the wealthy's potential is abrupt. While you use some linking words like 'Nowadays' and 'To conclude', the flow between sentences could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but the connection between the example of a 'rich man offering jobs' and the broader argument about societal influence is slightly disjointed. Improving the variety of linking phrases would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. You rely on somewhat informal or repetitive phrasing, such as 'crazy amount of money', 'doing financially great', and 'make a lot of good'. While these phrases are understandable, they do not demonstrate a wide range of academic or less common lexical items. There are also minor issues with collocation, such as 'make a lot of good' instead of 'do a great deal of good'. To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and idiomatic collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'the rich has' should be 'the rich have', and 'most number of chances' is awkward phrasing. There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'from middle class families' (should be 'from middle-class families'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You should focus on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
