IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Helping others improves one's own health, boosts happiness and builds a strong community. A large number of individuals believes that the most important thing about being well off is that they had the opportunity of helping others. This essay intends to explore the main reason of my agreement or disagreement in the forthcoming paragraphs with relevant examples. Although, I partially disagree with the statement.
The first and the foremost reason behind my disbelief is that being rich does not indicates that they are the only ones who are capable enough of helping others. However, it is the responsibility of every individual to help each other if they can because being helped financially is not always the need of individuals sometimes a person requires emotional support, personal freedom, family assurance and to fulfill the psychological needs which can be achieved by having supportive family and friends.
On the flip side, However, rich people can make a broader contribution to society by investing in hospitals, schools and community projects. Such contributions can have a long term impact as it may help the needy individuals. Therefore, having sufficient financial resources can make oneself capable enough to overcome such kind of social problems. Moreover, our government is also trying to help such individuals who are trapped in some sort of problems but the wealthy people can also can contribute in the same to help the nation as a whole.
In conclusion, in the wake of above it is clearly, easily and logically be concluded that although, the well-to-do people are capable enough of helping others but it should be the responsibility of each one of us to help others as much as we can because help is not always in the capital aspect. However, sometimes it is in the emotional aspect as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt, but the position is somewhat inconsistent. While you state you 'partially disagree', the development of your arguments is slightly disjointed. You argue that helping is a universal responsibility, not just for the wealthy, but then acknowledge the unique capacity of the wealthy to fund large-scale projects. The ideas are relevant but could be more deeply explored; for instance, the link between wealth and the 'opportunity' to help is mentioned but not fully analysed in terms of the moral weight of that opportunity. To reach a higher band, ensure your thesis is clearly maintained and that each paragraph directly supports your stance without contradicting the main argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'The first and the foremost reason', 'On the flip side', and 'In conclusion'. However, some transitions are used awkwardly or redundantly, such as 'On the flip side, However,'. Additionally, some sentences feel mechanical, and the flow between ideas could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but the overall progression of the argument feels slightly repetitive in the conclusion. Improving the variety and naturalness of your linking words will help elevate your score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'psychological needs', 'financial resources', and 'well-to-do'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor collocation errors, such as 'disbelief' (where 'disagreement' would be more accurate) and 'capital aspect'. You also repeat the word 'individuals' frequently, which limits the sophistication of your writing. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and collocations, and focus on using less common vocabulary in a way that sounds natural rather than forced.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('does not indicates', 'individuals believes') and redundant phrasing ('can also can contribute'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure in the conclusion is slightly cluttered. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and eliminating redundant auxiliary verbs.
