IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Some people are of the opinion that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. I agree with this position as riches give one the opportunity to help family and friend living in provety and creates employment for others.
Riches exposes one to a life that a person never thought that he would experience. Being able to afford luxury items and having the opportunity to living in a luxury house and live the luxury lifestyle sounds good, but all of this may not mean so much is you loved one are not there to enjoy it with you. A person can have all the luxury in the world but has a mother that is sick. Being able to afford the best hostipal is a luxury that is not talked about as much. Being able to fly friends and family members aboard to get the treatment that they did is also luxury. Sickness is something that can result to death. The ability to help others in trying times is the important thing. For example A rich son can afford to pay is father's hospitial bills in best hospitial in town. Riches saves lifes.
Rich also helps create job opportunities for others. A rich friend can start up a business for his friend or employ other person help them build their own wealth or connections for themselves. Creating job opportunity is luxury today as there are no jobs but there are so many jobseekers. This many help the family of the employee as the job maybe the only source of income the family has. For example a rich business man may need an sale repersentative and employ a girl that has being out of school for over five years with a sick mother. That job maybe the only source of income the family has.
While I agree that rich comes with connection and change in status, in the society. It also gives one the opportunity to see the world from traveling to different countries.
I totally agree that riches is important because it gives one the opportunity to help others. Most times this help may come without being noticed. Being able to help with little things like paying your family members bills and the ability to employ others maybe all the help the next person need.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, agreeing with the prompt that the most important aspect of being rich is helping others. The ideas are extended and supported, focusing on helping family, friends, and the broader community by creating jobs and paying medical bills. For example, the student explains how a wealthy person can pay for a father's hospital bills or start a business for a friend. While some of the supporting examples are a bit generalized, such as the mention of an unemployed sales representative, the main ideas are well-developed and directly relevant to the prompt, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.5 to 7.0. Given the clear positioning and well-supported arguments, this aligns best with Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organization. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, starting with an introduction and followed by body paragraphs exploring different ways wealth allows people to help others, such as covering medical expenses and creating employment. Paragraphing is used appropriately throughout. However, some cohesive devices and referencing are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'being able to' and 'this'. Additionally, transitional links between sentences could be smoother to elevate the flow. Overall, the logical structure and clear organization satisfy the Band 6 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'provety' (poverty), 'repersentative' (representative), and 'status'. There are several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'hostipal' instead of hospital, 'aboard' instead of abroad, and 'lifes' instead of lives. Furthermore, grammatical forms of words are occasionally confused, as seen in 'rich comes with connection' instead of riches or wealth. Although these errors are frequent enough to detract from precision, the vocabulary remains minimally adequate to convey the intended meaning, matching the Band 5 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional-style reasoning. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in tense consistency, singular/plural agreement, and articles. Examples include 'if you loved one are not there' (loved ones are), 'a mother that is sick', 'Rich also helps', and 'a rich business man may need an sale repersentative'. Subject-verb agreement slips are also present, such as 'the important thing' versus plural contexts. While these errors occur regularly and cause some difficulty for the reader, communication is rarely completely impeded, which places the writing securely within the Band 5 range.
