Student answer (Band 5.0)

As far as this topic is concerned, I would like to say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree. This has always been debatable and has now become more controversial with many people claiming that it is beneficial while others reject this notion. The substantial influence of this trend has sparked the controversy over the potential impact in the recent years. From my perspective, the former proposition appears to be more rational. This essay will further elaborate my views for favoring the positive or negative impact of this trend and thus will lead to a logical conclusion.

Analyzing the statement further, the primary reason is rich people have more opportunities to support those who are less fortunate. They can donate money to charities, provide food and education to poor people, and support hospitals and schools.. Categorically discussing, it cannot be ignored that the main reason behind this is that especially in our country, it has far-reaching consequences. They can invest their money in businesses and create employment opportunities for other people. Therefore, being rich can benefit not only individuals but also society

Moving further, it is pertinent to mention that it is the basic duty of the government to provide a safe and stable society for the betterment of the public. It is imperative for the authorities concerned to look into the factor behind this issue and take a drastic action against the concerned persons.

To encapsulate, I would like to appeal to the learned figures to come forward, focus their gaze at this issue and launch a vigorous campaign to reform it across society

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the task by stating a clear position that being rich provides an opportunity to help others. The writer provides some relevant ideas, such as donating to charities, providing food and education, and creating employment opportunities through business investments. However, the development of ideas in the body paragraphs is somewhat hindered by formulaic introduction language and a shift into unrelated arguments in the conclusion, where the writer suddenly introduces government duties and appeals to learned figures. While the main stance is maintained, the supporting arguments become muddled towards the end. Consequently, the task response aligns best with Band 5.5, rounding down to a 5.0 for incomplete development and digression into irrelevant topics in the final paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays basic overall organization, but progression is disrupted by mechanical and repetitive transitions such as 'Analyzing the statement further', 'Categorically discussing', and 'Moving further'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraphs are brief and introduce new, disjointed concepts rather than concluding the essay logically. Referencing and cohesive devices are sometimes used inaccurately or repetitively, such as 'the former proposition appears to be more rational', which does not accurately reflect the simple prompt. The overall cohesion lacks fluency and natural progression, fitting the Band 5 descriptors well.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, featuring some appropriate terms like 'substantial influence', 'employment opportunities', and 'charities'. However, the writer frequently relies on memorized, formulaic chunks of academic filler, such as 'sparked the controversy over the potential impact in the recent years' and 'To encapsulate, I would like to appeal to the learned figures'. There are also occasional word choice and collocation inaccuracies. The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive in places, restricting the score to a solid Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but attempts at complex structures frequently result in errors. There are noticeable grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including punctuation issues (e.g., missing spaces after periods like 'others. To what extent', double periods at the end of sentences like 'schools..'), and awkward phrasing ('further elaborate my views for favoring the positive or negative impact'). While basic meaning is usually conveyed, frequent errors in sentence structure and mechanics cause some difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar at a Band 5.0 level.
