IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In this society if one is rich, people expect them to spend their money in doing social service or helping others wheather they prefer it not, if they dont they are branded as arrogant and selfish. But there also wealthy people who spend their money for social cause and there are some who dosent, which is right is highly subjective and debatable.

Wealthy people are generally in a posistion to help those in needs by handling their educational expenses or medical expenses or financial needs e.t.c.These people can help the society and Government based on their financial condition which can help to change the standard of living of various people who are financially disabled. There are many induviduals who help the society throught trust and foundations to provide people with dream and talent a oppurtunity to achieve their dream which is highly appreciatable.

But on the other hand if a wealthy individual dosent want to spend some of his wealth on a social cause or for well being of the others there will a inbalance in the society with rich being rich and poor being poor throught their life. But we cannot blame or judge induvidual for their personal decisions its upto them to decide how they should spend their money.

In my opinion i strongly believe that if a person is blessed with enough wealth to help others, he should involve himself in helping those who in need and provide for the betterment of the society in order bring a balance.we should also accept that it's a induviduals personal decision and us as a society should'nt expect them or blame them if they chose not to.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout. The writer discusses the societal expectations of wealthy people, acknowledges both sides of the argument regarding charitable obligations, and concludes with a balanced personal view. Ideas are generally relevant, such as mentioning how the rich can fund educational and medical expenses through trusts and foundations. However, some arguments lack deep extension and tend to generalise slightly, for instance when discussing the overall societal balance. The examples provided are adequate to support the main points, showing a clear understanding of the prompt's requirements, earning a solid Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure. Each paragraph addresses a distinct facet of the prompt, moving from societal expectations to the benefits of wealth, the counter-argument about personal choice, and finally the writer's conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in sentences starting abruptly without adequate transitional links, for example 'But there also wealthy people...' and 'These people can help...'. Furthermore, cohesive devices are somewhat basic or repetitive ('But', 'and'). Paragraphing is present and helps segregate ideas, but logical progression between sentences requires more careful management, placing this performance firmly in Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'subjective', 'debatable', and 'financially disabled'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the overall quality, including 'wheather' instead of 'whether', 'dosent' instead of 'doesn't', 'posistion' instead of 'position', 'induviduals' instead of 'individuals', and 'oppurtunity' instead of 'opportunity'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they reflect a lack of precision and control over less common lexical items, limiting the score to a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some capability to construct multi-clause sentences. However, grammatical accuracy is weak due to frequent errors, particularly run-on sentences, comma splices, and missing punctuation. For instance, the opening sentence 'In this society if one is rich, people expect them to spend their money in doing social service or helping others wheather they prefer it not, if they dont they are branded as arrogant and selfish.' strings multiple clauses together incorrectly. Other errors include missing apostrophes in contractions ('dont', 'doesent', 'shouldnt') and minor subject-verb agreement issues. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from achieving a higher band, resulting in a Band 5.0.
