IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that the most necessary advantage of being rich is that one finds the oppertunity to help others. While others argue that by being rich, one becomes more selfish. Instead of helping others he tries to save money or investit to increase his business. Although, this argument is not entirely wrong, money may increases greed and selfishness. In my opinion, if a person is rich he has more opportunties to help others by fulfilling their financial needs.

On one hand, people say that money increases the behaviour of greed and self centeredness among people. The become more selfish and spend time thinking about the ways to increase their money instead of using it for some good cause. For instance, feudal landlords, instead of helping poor people, use their generational weath to make people their slaves. Thus, money enhances superioroty complex among rich people instead of making them generous.

On the other hand, many people believe that the foremost important thing of being rich is that one can uses that money to help others financially. One should remain curteous even after getting rich. For example, many developed countries across the world raise funding for underdeveloped and poor nations to support them economically. Rich countries have numerous ways to help poor nations.

In my opionion, the best of all virtues is to help others. Those who are rich get more opportunities to help poors. It is accurately said that," We rise by lifting others." In short, the most important thing of being rich is to be able to help others. Therefore, instead of being greedy one should spend their to help others financially.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both sides of the issue—whether wealth leads to altruism or selfishness—and presents a clear personal position that being rich provides greater opportunities to help others. The main ideas are presented, but some points lack full extension and suffer from slight over-generalisation, such as the example regarding feudal landlords making people slaves. While all parts of the task are covered, the development of ideas remains somewhat basic and superficial in places, which places the response securely in the Band 6 territory. The conclusion clearly restates the writer's view, ensuring the position is maintained throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is arranged into four paragraphs with a clear introduction and conclusion, demonstrating a logical overall arrangement. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions between paragraphs, such as 'On one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In my opionion.' However, referencing and cohesion are at times mechanical or faulty, for instance writing 'The become more selfish' where a pronoun is misspelled. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments, but the logical progression within paragraphs could be smoother and better supported by precise cohesive links.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'generational wealth,' 'generous,' and 'curteous.' However, there are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'oppertunity' instead of opportunity, 'investit' instead of invest it, 'weath' instead of wealth, 'superioroty' instead of superiority, and 'curteous' instead of courteous. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they lower the precision of the writing, aligning the vocabulary performance with Band 6 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional structures like 'if a person is rich he has more opportunties' and concessive clauses with 'Although.' There are frequent errors in punctuation and grammar, such as comma splices ('Thus, money enhances superioroty complex among rich people instead of making them generous.'), missing articles ('use their generational weath'), and incorrect verb forms ('one can uses that money'). While these errors do not impede overall comprehension, they occur frequently enough to prevent the writing from reaching the Band 7 level, confirming a Band 6 score.
