IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The statement tells us that the people who are rich, the most important thing in their life is to help others.

This essay tells us about the personality of rich people that there are many people in the world who are rich and they have opportunity to help other deserving peoples. Some of the peoples get onto this opportunity and they try to help people to what extent they can help.Plenty of them help others just to seek the blessings of god and there are many other people which help people just to show other people that how much wealthy they are.i just think so that they are the most useless people of society because they just want to gain attention.

The topic of the essay tells us about the people who are rich have the opportunity to help others,i agree with that but if you are doing it just to show others so, then there will be no blessings upon you. there are many other people who have so much wealth but they just dont help poor people because they are the envy of others, they just feel ashamed of helping other people.

In my opinion those who are rich had a very good opportunity to help others and they should avail this because it would help them to gain some respect and also this will help them to increase their wealth.

the conclusion of the essay is that the people who are rich have so much wealth that they can help others to which the poor people can meet their needs and to eat some food for their good health.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student addresses the prompt by discussing whether helping others is the most important aspect of being rich. A position is presented, agreeing with the premise while introducing the caveat that motivations matter—distinguishing between those who help sincerely and those who do so to show off or gain attention. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat repetitive and limited. For instance, the discussion on showy philanthropists and envious non-helpers is underdeveloped, and the reasoning that helping others will 'increase their wealth' is stated without substantial extension or clear logic. The response meets the basic requirements of addressing the prompt, aligning best with a Band 5.0 descriptor as the position is sometimes unclear and the ideas are limited and under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks proper paragraphing and structural progression, written mostly as a block of text with arbitrary spacing rather than logically organised body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes repetitive or inaccurate, such as starting multiple sentences with 'this essay tells us' or 'the topic of the essay'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making the flow disjointed. There is no clear overall progression of argument, which is characteristic of Band 4.0 or 5.0. Given that some overall arrangement of ideas exists, albeit repetitive and poorly sequenced, it sits firmly at a Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive. Words like 'rich', 'people', 'help', and 'wealth' are overused throughout the text. There are also inappropriate word choices and collocations, such as 'deserving peoples' (peoples is incorrect here), 'get onto this opportunity', and 'they are the envy of others'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic message, the frequent repetition and noticeable errors in word choice restrict the score to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple or poorly connected compound sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors, including run-on sentences ('The statement tells us that the people who are rich, the most important thing...'), comma splices, missing capitalisation (e.g., 'i', 'the conclusion'), and incorrect verb tenses or agreement ('there are many other people which help'). These errors frequently cause difficulty for the reader and demonstrate weak control over punctuation and complex structures, placing the essay at a Band 4.5 or 5.0. A Band 5.0 is awarded as meaning is generally decipherable despite the frequent errors.
