IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is widely believed by some individuals that becoming rich has the opportunity to help poor people in different ways. I largely agree with this view because financial resources enable individuals to make a significant positive impact on society, although wealth also provides personal benefits such as security and freedom.

One major reason why helping others is the most valuable aspect of wealth is that rich people can improve countless live through financial support. They can donate to charities, build schools and hospitals, or provide scholarships for disadvantaged students. Such contributions often create long-term benefits that extend beyond immediate assistance. For instance, many successful business leaders have funded educational programmes that allow children from poor families to receive quality education, greatly helping them escape poverty.

Furthermore, wealthy individuals can use their resources to respond quickly to emergencies. During natural disasters or health crises, large donation from affluent people can provide food, shelter, and medical car when governments alone may struggle to meet urgent needs. This demonstrates that wealth can become a powerful tool for solving social problems rather than merely serving personal interests.

However, it would be unrealistic to claim that helping others is the only important benefit of being rich. Financial stability allows people to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle, travel, pursue their interests, and provide better opportunities for their own families. Wealth also offers greater independence by reducing financial stress and increasing access to health care and education. Nevertheless, these advantages mainly benefit individuals and their close ones, whereas charitable actions have a much wider influence on society.

To conclude, while wealth undoubtedly brings personal comfort and freedom, I believe its greatest value lies in the opportunity to improve the lives of others.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The candidate has successfully addressed all parts of the prompt by exploring the notion that helping others is the most important aspect of being rich while also considering counter-arguments. A clear position is established in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as business leaders funding educational programmes and wealthy individuals responding to natural disasters. The progression of thought is logical, and the arguments flow naturally towards a well-reasoned conclusion. The response satisfies all requirements for Task Achievement at a high level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with the introduction of the thesis, moving through well-supported body paragraphs addressing both sides of the argument, and ending with a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'To conclude' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is managed effectively, ensuring that the transition from discussing societal benefits to personal advantages is smooth and coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student employs a sufficient and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items such as 'financial resources', 'disadvantaged students', 'affluent people', and 'financial stability' are used with an awareness of style and collocation. However, there are a few minor lexical errors, such as writing 'countless live' instead of 'countless lives' and 'medical car' instead of 'medical care'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meanings and supports clear communication throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional ideas effectively. There is evidence of good control over grammar and punctuation, with frequent error-free sentences, such as 'Financial stability allows people to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle...'. Minor slips do occur, such as 'large donation' instead of 'large donations', but these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The grammatical range is sufficient to support clear and articulate expression.
