IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

I STRONGLY AGREE.

I MEAN PERSOALLY IF I WAS THAT RICH THATS THE FIRST THING I WILL DO.

BEING BLESSED WITH SOMETHING THAT CAN HELP OTHERS IS THE BEST BLESS FROM GOD EVER.

YOU WILL FEEL GREAT ABOUT YOURSELF AND MAKES OTHERS FEEL GOOD TOO.

YOU CAN RELEIF THEM FROM THE HEAVY BURDONS THAT A LACK OF MONEY DO TO PEOPLE.

I MEAN JUST SEEING THAT SMILE AFTER TAKING CARE OF A PERSON WHEN HE MOST NEEDED HELP IS PRICELESS AND SADLY ONLY RICH PEOPLE CAN DO THAT IN MY OPINION.

I CAN SEE WHY PEOPLE WOULD DISAGREE LIKE ITS A RICH PERSONS HARD EARNED MONEY AFTER ALL AND HE IS OBLIGED TO DO NOTHING IN RETURN TO ANYONE NOT EVEN HIS PARENTS.

BUT THAT WOULD BE TOTALLY SELFISH FROM THE RICH PERSONS PART I MEAN IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE A LARGE AMOUNT TO MAKE A DIFFRENCE IF ITS WONT NOTICEBALLY AFFECT THE RICH. IN GOD EYES SHARING A BLESSING IS A TRUE GOOD DID AND IT WILL REMOVE SINS FROM THE SINNERS SHOULDERS. I THINK ANYONE WHOS ABLE TO HELP SHOULD DO IT WITHOUT SECOND GEUSSING A CHEAP PERSON WONT TAKE HIS MONEY TO HIS GRAVE ITS JUST PRINED PAPER THATS ALL AND WORTH NOTHING COMPARE TO WHAT IT CAN DO IN ANOTHER HUMAIN LIFE OR EVEN ANIMALS.DONATING TO THE CHARITIES THAT KNOWS WHOS IN NEED IS THE MOST NOBLE THING TO DO IF A RICH PERSON IS TOO LAZY TO DO HIMSELF/M

ANYWAY THAT IS JUST MY HUMBLE OPINION.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student addresses the prompt directly by taking a strong, clear position in favour of the statement that helping others is the most important aspect of being rich. The response includes relevant ideas regarding the emotional reward of charity and the moral obligation of wealthy individuals to alleviate suffering. However, the development of these ideas is rather limited and lacks the depth expected for higher bands. The arguments remain somewhat superficial, relying on general assertions rather than fully extended analysis or specific examples. For instance, the mention of donating to charities is introduced briefly without further elaboration. Despite these limitations, all parts of the task are addressed, and the position is maintained throughout, fitting the Band 6 descriptor well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5

The text suffers significantly from a lack of proper paragraphing, as the entire response is written as one large block of text with no clear division of ideas. This makes the overall arrangement difficult to navigate. Cohesive devices are minimal and rudimentary, with transitions relying heavily on conversational phrases like 'I MEAN' and 'ANYWAY'. Although the progression of ideas is somewhat followable because the writer moves from their initial stance to acknowledging opposing views and then concluding, the lack of mechanical paragraphing and sophisticated cohesive ties pulls the performance down. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the absence of structured layout prevents the essay from achieving a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, featuring frequent reliance on everyday words and informal expressions such as 'PRINED PAPER', 'HUMAIN', and 'CHEAP PERSON'. There are several spelling and word-choice errors, including 'PERSOALLY', 'RELEIF', 'BURDONS', 'DIFFRENCE', 'DID', 'GEUSSING', and 'COMPARE'. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'OBLIGED', 'NOBLE', and 'SUBSTANTIAL', the execution contains too many errors that occasionally strain the reader. The lexical range is adequate to convey simple opinions, but the high frequency of spelling mistakes and informal register limit the score to Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The response consists entirely of capital letters, which gives the impression of shouting and disregards standard punctuation conventions such as commas, full stops, and capitalisation rules for sentence beginnings. The grammatical structures used are a mix of simple and complex forms, but many sentences run on without proper punctuation, such as 'DONATING TO THE CHARITIES THAT KNOWS WHOS IN NEED IS THE MOST NOBLE THING TO DO IF A RICH PERSON IS TOO LAZY TO DO HIMSELF/M'. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'CHARITIES THAT KNOWS', 'THAT A LACK OF MONEY DO') and preposition use. These errors occur frequently and cause noticeable difficulty for the reader, aligning with the Band 4.5 descriptor.
