IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Many people believe that main benefit to become a rich is that to has the opportunity to help others. I agree with this statement but this is not only factor to being wealthy. there are some other things which i discussed in this eassy.

One main advantage of being rich is that it provide opportunity to help needy people. If a wealthy person gives charity to different schools, hospitals, charitable places and many other institutions that perform work for the welfare of society then its a great contribution to grow an ecenomy. For example if wealthier person provides funds to an institution like school then many needy childeren get education and become fruitful for a nation. If we talk about hospitals then many poor people avail healthy life.

Nevetheless i dont beleive that helping others is not the only or main points of being healthy. Financially stability can also improve the person's own quality of life. For example a healthy food helps to remain healthy, a comfortable home and high qualoity of education for their childeren. They also travel to different areas of countries and outside the country without any difficulty of money.

Furthermore financially stable person also help othersb to provide working opprtunities for many individulas. for example if an enterprenure start a new business with money then it provide job opportunity to different individuals that enhance the growth of economy.

In conclusion i want to say that no doubt being a wealthy person gives benefit to help many other people but it also provides different other aspects of healthy life good education and different business opportunites.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether helping others is the most important aspect of being rich, while also introducing other benefits of wealth. The student establishes a clear position agreeing with the statement while noting additional factors, such as personal quality of life and business opportunities. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat superficial and repetitive, particularly in the body paragraphs where examples like funding schools or starting a business are stated simply without deep elaboration. This places the performance within Band 6, as the task is addressed with relevant ideas, but some points are under-developed or briefly presented.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays an overall logical arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as charitable contributions versus personal lifestyle benefits. However, cohesion is often faulty or mechanical. The student relies heavily on basic transitional phrases like 'For example' and 'In conclusion', and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous pronoun use in 'this is not only factor' or 'which i discussed in this eassy'. Furthermore, cohesive devices are sometimes inadequate or repetitive, leading to a somewhat choppy progression of ideas. This aligns with the Band 5 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student attempts a range of vocabulary suitable for discussing wealth and society, including words like 'institution', 'welfare', 'contribution', and 'entrepreneur'. However, there are numerous noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the writing, such as 'ecenomy' instead of economy, 'childeren' instead of children, 'opprtunities', and 'individulas'. Additionally, the student repeatedly confuses 'healthy' with 'wealthy' or 'health' (e.g., 'healthy food helps to remain healthy' when discussing financial stability, and 'being healthy' when referring to being wealthy). These errors show a limited range with noticeable mistakes that cause some difficulty, fitting Band 5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional clauses ('If a wealthy person gives charity...'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak, featuring frequent errors in basic grammar, subject-verb agreement, and articles (e.g., 'main benefit to become a rich', 'that to has the opportunity', 'if wealthier person provides funds', 'its a great contribution'). Punctuation and capitalization are also problematic, with lowercase letters used for the pronoun 'i'. While communication is generally maintained and the reader can follow the main points, the high frequency of errors across simple and complex structures restricts the score to Band 5.
