IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that being a rich person has their own important value as it provides them with opportunity to help other individuals. I completely agree with this statement. This essay will discuss the importance of rich life that are freedom to utilise money wisely and opportunity to extend support and service.

Firstly, prosperous people have different ways through which they can reach out to the needy. This is because being rich has their own benefits such as, they have complete freedom to spend their income to provide money to organisations, schools, hospitals and some other to enchance the social well being of others. People like Ratan Tata, for instance, are very kind and grounded to earth person when said to help out other people. It is observed, he has given most of his fianance to various services for all age group. Hence, there are rich people with humble nature and no pride.

Secondly, and even more importantly, when wealthy individual support, they are more likely to realise their actions have a positive impact on the world around them. In other words, if the millionares get opportunity to serve they leave no chance to extend support and service that is obtained from their money. In major countries, many rich people are found raising NGO'S, school for disable people, old age homes. So, despite being wealthy, there are some among rich people that truly care and provide help for others.

In conclusion, it is a great act of love that rich people show through their life, serving other people by the opporunity to support and provide along with the freedom to spend income wisely.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt directly, presenting a clear position that the primary value of wealth is the opportunity to help others. The student outlines two main supporting ideas: the freedom to utilise money wisely and the opportunity to extend support and service. The ideas are supported with a relevant example, such as Ratan Tata, and mention of philanthropic avenues like NGOs, schools, and old age homes. While some arguments, such as the second body paragraph, tend to be slightly repetitive in their phrasing and could be developed with greater depth or specificity to reach higher bands, the overall task is adequately addressed with a consistent position throughout, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to link sentences and paragraphs, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly, and even more importantly', and 'In conclusion'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty or mechanical, as seen in phrases like 'when wealthy individual support' and the somewhat awkward transitions within the body paragraphs. Paragraph progression is generally clear, but the logical flow is sometimes disrupted by minor grammatical awkwardness, placing this response securely at Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'prosperous', 'philanthropic' (implied), and 'social well being'. However, there are notable word-choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'rich life' instead of 'wealthy lifestyle', 'grounded to earth person' instead of 'down-to-earth person', 'fianance' instead of 'finance', and 'disable people' instead of 'disabled people'. Spelling errors like 'enhence' (enhanced) and 'millionares' also appear. These inaccuracies do not severely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition with structures like conditional clauses ('if the millionares get opportunity to serve they leave no chance...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'being a rich person has their own important value', 'provides them with opportunity', and 'has their own benefits such as, they have'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but structural inaccuracies are persistent and occasionally cause minor difficulty for the reader, aligning the grammar performance with the Band 5.5 descriptors.
