IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In today's world, wealth is often associated with success, comfort and social status. Some people believe that the greatest advantage of being rich is the opportunity to help others. I largely agree with this view because wealthy individuals can improve people's lives and contributes to the development od society. However, personal happiness and financial security are also important.
On the one hand, one of the main benefits of being wealthy is the ability to support people in need. Rich individuals can denate money to charities, provide food to poor families and help children receive a good education. For example, a wealthy person can establish a scholarship programme for students from low-income backgrounds. This can open the door to better career opportunities and improve their future. Moreover, wealthy people can build hospitals, schools and other public facilties. Helping others is not only a noble act but also a way to create a positive impact on the world.
On the other hand, I believe that wealth also play an important role in providing personal security and a comfertable lifestyle. People need money to afford good housing, Nutritious food, healthcare and education for their families. Without financial stability, it can be difficult to enjoy a peaceful life or support others effectively. Therefore, although helping others is a valuable opportunities, it is not the only important aspect of being rich.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that helping others is one of the most meaningful advantages of wealth. Nevertheless, financial security, personal well-being and economic development are also significant.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position and discussing both the idea of helping others through wealth and the counter-arguments regarding personal security. In the introduction, the writer states, 'I largely agree with this view because wealthy individuals can improve people's lives and contributes to the development od society.' The body paragraphs effectively extend and support these ideas with relevant examples, such as establishing scholarship programmes and building public facilities. The position remains consistent throughout the essay, transitioning logically to acknowledge that personal security and a comfortable lifestyle are also significant aspects of being rich. Overall, the ideas are well-developed and fulfil the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are structured coherently across distinct paragraphs, beginning with a clear introduction, followed by balanced body paragraphs, and ending with a summary conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader, as seen with phrases like 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central topic. While referencing and linking are generally well-managed, occasional minor mechanical links prevent the response from reaching the highest band.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate and sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items with some flexibility and precision. Examples such as 'social status', 'low-income backgrounds', 'financial stability', and 'scholarship programme' show good control of topic-specific collocation. However, there are a few spelling and typographical errors, such as 'contributes' (instead of contribute), 'od' (instead of of), 'denate' (instead of donate), 'facilties' (instead of facilities), and 'comfertable' (instead of comfortable). These occasional inaccuracies do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the competent band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over a variety of structures. The writer successfully employs conditional and subordinate clauses, such as 'Without financial stability, it can be difficult to enjoy a peaceful life...' and 'Although helping others is a valuable opportunities...' (note the minor agreement error in 'opportunities'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'wealth also play' instead of 'plays', and a missing full stop in the second body paragraph ('backgrounds. This can open...'). Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication.
