IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Certain people argure that the most important aspect regarding being rich is that one who has the opportunity to help other people. I partially agree with this statement becuase although having an opportunity to help others can have contribution in this regard but it is not soley responsible that makes anyone rich. Other factors like harworking, decpline, and consistency are crucial in making anyone rich.

Firstly, helping others is a good thing and having an opportunity to help other can play a role in this regard upto some extent. Because helping others gives exposure and thorugh this connections can be made which are very beneficial for anyone who want to be rich. For instance, a person who is good in helping others and making connections can promote their business in number of ways like collaboration, promotion etc..

On the other hand, other aspects like hardwork, decpline and consistency are the main factors that drives any person to be rich and cannot be overlooked. Because anyone who has a dream and works hard for that with decpline, and consistency, it is guaranteed the they will achieve something they want even though it will not be 100% same but upto some extent. So all these aspects should be given top priority while helping others should also be taken into consideration.

In conclusion, helping others are something that comes more into the category of ethics and can play role to some extent. But more factors like personal struggle, punctuality etc. matters more than that.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the extent to which helping others is the most important aspect of being rich, presenting a clear position that the student partially agrees. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the argument regarding helping others providing exposure and connections is introduced in the second paragraph but lacks deep expansion or concrete real-world examples. Similarly, the counter-argument mentioning hard work, discipline, and consistency touches upon valid points, but the reasoning remains slightly vague, stating that people will achieve what they want 'upto some extent'. While all parts of the task are addressed, the ideas would benefit from more thorough elaboration and deeper support to reach a higher band. Consequently, the performance aligns well with the Band 5.5 to 6.0 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is divided into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing an overall logical arrangement. Paragraphing is attempted, though the division could be refined. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion', which help structure the essay. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes mechanical or awkward, such as 'one who has the opportunity' and 'Because helping others...'. The logical progression within paragraphs stumbles slightly due to repetitive phrasing and minor structural disconnects. For instance, transitioning from the benefit of connections to business promotion is abrupt. Therefore, the coherence and cohesion of the essay fit comfortably within the Band 6.0 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'collaboration', 'promotion', and 'consistency'. However, there are numerous spelling and word-choice inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'argure' instead of 'argue', 'becuase', 'soley' instead of 'solely', 'harworking', 'decpline', 'thorugh', and 'upto'. These errors occasionally draw attention, although they do not severely impede overall communication. The writer also relies on repetitive phrasing, repeatedly using 'upto some extent' and 'helping others'. Because the range is adequate but constrained by frequent spelling and lexical slips, a score of 5.5 is appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some capability to construct longer sentences, such as 'Because anyone who has a dream and works hard for that with decpline, and consistency, it is guaranteed the they will achieve something they want...'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, featuring frequent errors including tense misuse, missing prepositions, and structural awkwardness (e.g., 'one who has the opportunity', 'good in helping', 'drives any person to be rich and cannot be overlooked', and 'helping others are something'). Punctuation also presents occasional issues, such as double periods. While these errors rarely completely obscure the meaning, their frequency prevents the writer from achieving a higher band. Thus, a score of 5.0 reflects these grammatical limitations.
