IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Being a rich mean alot of money . That mean you can assit other people by give foods, water , house etc . So some people assume that being a rich one is mean having a opportunity to help other . I hardly agree with this statment .

Being a rich one mean . You do not care about money , you can have the foods as much as you want , and also you live in enormous house . But one other hand we have people who hardly eat , and live on road . So rich individuals must donate their welth to poor persons . Like raten tata usted to donate 75 percent of their profit to NGO or public care fund

But , rich persion have many thing to do with their money . First thing they have to pay tax to the goverment ,also pay business expence , the remain part of profit go to invester , after this all this process left over this go to owner of business. Most o f business reserve their profit in bank so at emergency time they can use that money . Business network is in the share not in cash . So this is also hard to donade . In interview a rich persion said that if i want to buy a new car . Then i have to sell my share also

In conculsion some rich people also donate their profit to poor person . But rest of rich people store that profit for near future or some miss happning . As we as dicuss that most of rich people contain thier money in share

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt regarding whether the most important thing about being rich is having the opportunity to help others. The writer states a position, saying 'I hardly agree with this statment', and brings in relevant ideas about wealth distribution, taxation, and business assets (such as shares). However, the development of ideas is limited and often unclear due to expression issues. While the essay touches on reasons why rich people might not simply give away cash, the reasoning is somewhat disjointed and lacks full elaboration. The overall argument struggles to maintain a consistent line of thought, placing this response at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, which shows an awareness of structural conventions for an essay. However, the logical progression is weak. Transitions between ideas are abrupt, and cohesive devices are either absent, repetitive, or misused, such as starting paragraphs with 'But' or 'In conculsion'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it hard to follow the flow of arguments between the paragraphs. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is faulty. This aligns closely with the Band 5 descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive (e.g., 'rich', 'money', 'foods', 'business', 'profit'). There are frequent spelling errors such as 'mean' instead of 'means', 'assit', 'welth', 'persion', 'expence', 'invester', 'donade', and 'miss happning'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary related to business and finance like 'tax', 'goverment', 'share', and 'NGO', but these are undermined by basic lexical inaccuracies and severe spelling limitations. The vocabulary is minimally adequate for basic communication, earning a Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 in line with standard whole or half-band practices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student uses a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but grammatical accuracy is very low. There are frequent, persistent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Being a rich mean', 'persion have'), missing articles (e.g., 'on road', 'in interview'), incorrect word forms (e.g., 'by give foods'), and faulty punctuation. Complex sentence attempts often contain multiple errors that impede readability and force the reader to decode the meaning. While simple structures occasionally appear correctly, the high frequency of basic grammatical errors places this response firmly at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
