IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people beleive that the most important thing about being rich is having the opportunity to help other people. I partly agree this opinion because rich people can help others in many ways. However, I do not think that helping others is the only important benefit of having money.

Firstly, wealthy people have more opportunities to support people who are in need. For example, they can donate money to charities and help poor families. They can also provide money for schools, hospitals and other social projects. In this way, their money can improve the lives of many people. Rich people can also give scholorships to students who are talented but cannot afford their education.

On the other hand, being rich can provide many other benefits apart from helping others. Having enough money can give a person a comfortable life and reduce financial problems. For example, people can a good home, better education and proper healthcare. They can also spend money on travelling and enjoying time with their family. Therefore, wealth can improve a person's own quality of life as well.

Moreover, i beleive that people do not need to be rich to help others. Ordinary people can help their family, friends and neighbours. They can give their time, share food or help someone with their work. Sometimes, emotional support and kindness can be more valuable than money.

In conclusion, I agree that being rich gives people a good oppportunity to help others, especially through donations and social projects. However, I beleive that financial security, family life and personal happiness are also important benefits of being wealthy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a balanced and clear position that wealth facilitates helping others, but that this is neither the sole nor necessarily the most important benefit of being rich. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as donations to charities, funding social projects, and improving personal quality of life. The arguments are logical and well-developed. While there is a slight tendency to over-generalize in some points regarding ordinary people versus wealthy individuals, the overall task response fulfills the requirements for Band 7, as a clear position is maintained throughout and all prompt elements are properly covered.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays clear logical organisation and a discernible progression of ideas from introduction to conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct sub-topic (e.g. ways rich people help, other benefits of wealth, how ordinary people can help). Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'On the other hand', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader through the argument. However, referencing and cohesive links are at times somewhat mechanical rather than entirely seamless, which places this response comfortably in the Band 7 category.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some flexibility and precision (e.g., 'financial problems', 'social projects', 'financial security'). There are attempts to use less common lexical items, although minor spelling errors occur throughout the text, such as 'beleive' instead of believe, and 'oppportunity' instead of opportunity. Word choice is generally appropriate and communication is never impeded by these inaccuracies. These traits align well with the Band 6 descriptor, where an adequate range is shown alongside some spelling and word-choice errors that do not affect the clarity of the message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses ('people who are in need', 'students who are talented') and conditional or modal structures effectively. There are some noticeable grammatical errors and typos, such as the missing verb in 'people can a good home' and repeated spelling errors like 'beleive'. Despite these flaws, complex structures are attempted with reasonable success, and punctuation and grammar errors rarely impede communication. This balance of mixed structures and minor errors fits the Band 6 criteria well.
