IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

 

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people believe that the most important thing about being rich is that they have a chance to help other people. I agree with this statement to some extent, because rich people can help poor people, but I also think that money is important for their own life.

Firstly, rich people have more money to help people who are in need. They can donate money to charities and provide food, clothes and education to poor people. For example, many rich people gives money to hospitals and schools, which can help a large number of people. They can also help their family members when they are facing financial problems. Therefore, having a lot of money gives people more opportunity to support others.

However, I do not completely agree that helping others is the most important thing about being rich. Money can also make a person's own life more comfortable and secure. Rich people can afford better healthcare, good education and a comfortable house. They can also travel to different countries and enjoy their free time without worrying about money. For example, a wealthy person can pay for expensive medical treatment if they or their family becomes sick.

Moreover, not every rich person wants to help other people. Some people prefer to spend their money on luxury things such as expensive cars, clothes and holidays. It depends on the person and their thinking. Being rich only gives them the ability to help others, but it does not mean that they will always do it.

In conclusion, I partly agree that the opportunity to help others is an important benefit of being rich. However, I believe that financial security and having a comfortable life are also important advantages of having a lot of money.
