IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is supposed that rich people has the oppurtunity to help others. I agree with the statement but some instance it depend upon the willingness and kindness of the people.

Rich people are considered as the high class or the highly marginalized people in our society. They have sufficient amount of capital. They are capable of investing money in different sectors so that it will facilitate to the other group of poor and marginalized group of people. They can do business, social programmes, investment in health, education sector. So, that other people get chance to get employment, health service facilities and so on.

For an example, If wealthy people open cafes or resturents, establish hospitals and schools then it will creates employment oppurtunity to the people.

For some instance, Rich people are wealthy but if they don't want to invest his or her resource to the society then it is pointless about helping others. But my inclination is towards helping others because basically people become rich only by doing business and by serving other. In the recent news of flood in nepal, many businessmen, enterpenuer, influencer actor who earn lots of money provide money, cloths, raise fund through prime minister fund program was and collect huge amount of money for the flood victiom which is commendable work done by them .If they don't have money then they couldn't able to assist in this situation.

Thus, I believe that being rich is the factor that will create oppurtunity to help needy people. The qualities of having capital and willingness of wealthy people both should be included inorder to help her.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether the most important thing about being rich is the opportunity to help others, and a clear position is established in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. The student acknowledges that wealth provides resources, while also noting that personal willingness is a factor. Ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as establishing businesses and mentioning flood relief efforts in Nepal. However, some arguments tend to over-generalise or remain slightly under-developed, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6 descriptors. The prompt is addressed thoroughly enough to meet the core requirements without major omissions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from discussing business investments to individual willingness and charitable acts. Paragraphing is utilised, although some paragraphs contain multiple distinct thoughts that could be separated for better flow. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'For an example,' 'Thus,' and 'For some instance,' but some transitions feel mechanical or slightly inaccurate in phrasing (e.g., 'For some instance'). Referencing is mostly clear, though occasional awkward phrasing disrupts the smooth progression of ideas. Overall, the structural framework meets the criteria for Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'marginalized', 'enterpenuer' (entrepreneur), and 'commendable'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('oppurtunity', 'resturents', 'victiom') and occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation (e.g., 'highly marginalized people' and 'pointless about helping others'). While these errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher band, communication is rarely impeded, demonstrating the characteristics typical of a Band 5.5 or solid Band 6 lexical performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional clauses ('If wealthy people open cafes...') and relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('rich people has', 'it will creates'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing ('the factor that will create oppurtunity'). While these errors persist and cause occasional distraction for the reader, the meaning can still be understood, reflecting the performance standard associated with Band 5.0.
