IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 6.0)
A lot of people are of the opinion that the single most crucial aspect of being wealthy is that it creates the opportunity to support others. This is a common practice among the elite class who diligently donate money, while some may not accept it as important due to factors affecting dependency.
Being blessed with an enormous amount of money often brings out positive moral values in a human being. It creates a sense of responsibility among the fortunate ones to look out for the needy. The reason for taking this responsibilty is usually driven by the belief that God grants more to the one looking out for people who need support. This particular motto enables the rich to distribute their valuable assets in hope of receiving more from god. For example, a billionare in India has inaugrated various charitable trusts which specialise for different cause like cancer relief, animal care and educational support. This particular person has been observed speaking in interviews sharing experiences where he says that his turnover increased by heaps and bounds after he pledged to support for these social causes.
On the other hand, some rich class individuals look down on this particular action because they feel handouts eventually make people lazy to put in their own efforts for self improvements. This principal is derived from the fact that free support is usually valued less by a person rather than having earned that same facility with his own hardwork. For example, a friend of mine decided to help a workers family by sending him regular monthly financial aid. This move backfired when he saw changes in that workers behaviour as he stopped coming to work and became less efficient at his tasks as he became too dependant on the free earnings he received.
In conclusion, there are people who have good intentions to help the needy.
This is often encouraged, but a fair limit is required as it might spoile the habit of the needy person leading to be addicted to support.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by exploring whether helping others is the most important aspect of being wealthy, presenting both sides of the argument. You present a clear position that balances philanthropy with the potential drawbacks of dependency. Ideas are generally extended and supported, such as the example of the billionaire in India and the anecdote about the worker. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise, and the conclusion is a bit brief and repetitive. Overall, your ideas are well-conceived and relevant, meeting the expectations of Band 6.5 to 7.0. Because your position is clear and all parts of the prompt are addressed with relevant supporting examples, this performance aligns comfortably with the Band 7 descriptor.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
Your essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You successfully divide your ideas into distinct paragraphs, starting with an introduction, moving to the supporting view, then the opposing view, and finishing with a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'For example', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel slightly mechanical, as seen in the phrase 'This particular person' and 'This particular motto'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but the final conclusion paragraph is somewhat disjointed and abrupt. These features place your coherence and cohesion securely at a Band 6.5, which rounds to a solid Band 6 overall based on the descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'philanthropy' (implied), 'charitable trusts', and 'financial aid'. However, there are some noticeable word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'responsibilty', 'billionare', 'inaugrated', 'cause' instead of 'causes', 'principal' instead of 'principle', and 'spoile'. Phrases like 'by heaps and bounds' contain minor collocation inaccuracies (the standard idiom is 'by leaps and bounds'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent access to higher bands. You have sufficient range for flexibility and precision, but the minor mechanical and lexical errors place your performance at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You successfully use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the essay, such as 'A lot of people are of the opinion that...' and 'Being blessed with an enormous amount of money often brings out...'. There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'specialise for different cause', 'pledged to support for these social causes', and 'leading to be addicted to support'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but some sentences are slightly over-extended and lack precision. While complex structures are attempted, they are occasionally faulty, which places this response at Band 6.0 according to the official descriptors.
