IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is believed that the biggest advantage of being wealthy is that they get the opportunity to help others. I strongly agree with this view as the wealthy people can help others by donating money to charity and by helping organisations building better facilities for the poor and needy people.
Elite class can play a vital role in making this world a better place for the poor and needy people of our society. They can do so by donating money to different organisations working for the benefits of needy people. By utilising the donations, these charity organisations can construct the schools for the better education of the children whose parents cannot afford their educational expenses. Similarly, these donations can also be utilised for accessibility the better health facilities for the poor of the society
Whereas, we can help others in many other ways as well. We can help blindly people cross the road or help our colleagues in there daily tasks as well, or we can help others by feeding them which has nothing to do with being rich. Everyone can help others in one way or the other as money is not the only factor in this case.
In conclusion, I agree with the statement that most important merit of being is that they get greater opportunities of helping people. As there are other ways of helping people as well, but the rich can contribute in the construction of schools and hospitals for the poor people of our society making things better for them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear stance that helping others is the most important advantage of being wealthy. The writer presents relevant ideas, such as donating money to charity and helping construct schools and hospitals for the poor and needy. However, some ideas are underdeveloped and repetitive. For instance, the second paragraph mentions constructing schools and healthcare facilities, and this is largely repeated in the conclusion. Furthermore, the counter-argument in the third paragraph about helping people cross the road or feeding them is somewhat disjointed from the main discussion of wealth. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, earning a band score of 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is utilised, separating the main arguments and the counter-argument effectively. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or faulty. For instance, using 'Whereas' at the beginning of the third paragraph is grammatically incorrect in this context, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'help our colleagues in there daily tasks' with a pronoun slip. Progression is generally discernible, but transitions between ideas lack smoothness. This positions the response firmly at a band 6.0 for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common phrases such as 'elite class', 'vital role', and 'educational expenses'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, including 'accessibility the better health facilities', 'blindly people' instead of 'blind people', and 'merit of being' where a noun like 'wealth' is missing. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical inaccuracies restrict the score to a band 5.5, as these errors occasionally cause slight confusion for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structures with clauses like 'whose parents cannot afford their educational expenses'. However, grammatical errors are frequent throughout the essay. Examples include pronoun and article misuse ('the wealthy people', 'organisations building', 'accessibility the better health facilities'), and confusion with homophones or spelling in phrases like 'in there daily tasks' instead of 'their'. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they persist across the text, preventing the response from reaching a higher band.
