IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Few individuals believe that one of the most substantial advantages that a rich person holds in life is the opportunity to make others' life better. When a person is financially stable and has accumulated enough wealth to live the rest of his life in a carefree and peaceful manner, he is in a prime position to help others in unfavorable and difficult situations. I strongly agree with this viewpoint and in this essay, I will provide reasons and examples to support my perspective.
One of the primary reasons why rich people need to help the less affluent is because they have the ability to change the society for the better, this thing can drastically improve a poor person's life. Rich people can give charity and take part in philanthropic activities which can contribute towards the welfare of the society. For instance, if a community is suffering through a shortage of clean water and there is not enough water filters and other reservoirs to drink water from, the affluent and wealthy can give charity and become a part of life changing and life saving philanthropic efforts.
Another point to consider is that the wealthy can have the ability and the potential to help individuals who are struggling and are being crushed by the weight of responsibilities in their lives, such people are juggling many jobs and are trying to be the sole bread winner for a large family, which is often times mentally and physically a challenge for them. Affluent individuals can help such people and relieve their burden. For instance, a boss of a company who is aware fo the dire and unfavorable circumstances of his employees, can give extra perks and subsidies to individuals who are performing well and actually need the money and promote them. This would lessen their burden both psychologically and physiologically, making them healthier and more commited, disciplined and motivated to work towards company's vision and goal. Hence, the boss would be killing two birds with one stone.
In conclusion, being affluent, wealthy and financially stable is privilege in life which is not acquired by many. It opens doors to many philanthropic and charitable endeavours, which are ethically and morally right. However, one should not contribute all his wealth and resources towards such noble causes and try to balance enjoyment and good deeds, so that he can lead a better life with feelings of accomplishment and purpose.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task prompt, discussing the extent of agreement with the idea that the primary benefit of being rich is helping others. The writer presents a clear and well-developed position throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the shortage of clean water and the corporate boss providing perks to struggling employees. The arguments are logical and directly support the student's stance. While the scope of ideas is well-conveyed, the occasional minor over-generalisation keeps it at a strong level rather than the absolute peak, fully satisfying the requirements for Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to two body paragraphs and a balanced conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect ideas, such as 'For instance', 'Another point to consider is', and 'Hence'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. However, there are instances where referencing or transitions are slightly mechanical, such as the run-on comma splice in the second paragraph ('...society for the better, this thing can drastically...'). Overall, the logical structure and progression easily secure a Band 7.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, employing less common items such as 'philanthropic activities', 'financially stable', 'accumulated enough wealth', and 'psychologically and physiologically'. There is an awareness of style, and collocation is generally handled well. However, minor inaccuracies and slight lexical slips do occur, such as writing 'fo' instead of 'for' (typographical or slip) and occasional repetition of basic terms like 'help' and 'rich people'. These minor flaws prevent a higher band, but the vocabulary is fully adequate to convey precise meanings, aligning with a Band 7 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writer uses a good variety of complex structures alongside simple forms, demonstrating good overall control of grammar. Examples include conditional structures ('if a community is suffering...') and relative clauses. There are frequent error-free sentences, though a few errors persist, notably a comma splice in the second body paragraph ('...better for the better, this thing can...') and a minor spelling/typographical error ('fo' instead of 'for'). Punctuation is generally managed well, and the minor errors do not impede communication. This performance fits comfortably into Band 7, where complex structures are attempted with good control despite occasional lapses.
