IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some say that the most important thing about being rich is that one has the opportunity to help others. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Few individuals believe that one of the most substantial advantages that a rich person holds in life is the opportunity to make others' lives better. When a person is financially stable and has accumulated enough wealth to live the rest of his life in a carefree and peaceful manner, he is in a prime position to help others in unfavorable and difficult situations. I strongly agree with this viewpoint, and in this essay, I will provide reasons and examples to support my perspective.

One of the primary reasons why rich people need to help the less affluent is because they have the ability to change society for the better. This can drastically improve a poor person's life. Rich people can give charity and take part in philanthropic activities, which can contribute towards the welfare of society. For instance, if a community is suffering from a shortage of clean water and there are not enough water filters and other reservoirs to drink water from, the affluent and wealthy can give charity and become a part of life-changing and life-saving philanthropic efforts.

Another point to consider is that the wealthy have the ability and the potential to help individuals who are struggling and are being crushed by the weight of responsibilities in their lives. Such people are juggling many jobs and are trying to be the sole breadwinner for a large family, which is often a mental and physical challenge for them. Affluent individuals can help such people and relieve their burden. For instance, a boss of a company who is aware of the dire and unfavorable circumstances of his employees can give extra perks and subsidies to individuals who are performing well and actually need the money and promote them. This would lessen their burden both psychologically and physiologically, making them healthier, more committed, disciplined, and motivated to work towards the company's vision and goals. Hence, the boss would be killing two birds with one stone.

In conclusion, being affluent, wealthy, and financially stable is a privilege in life which is not acquired by many. It opens doors to many philanthropic and charitable endeavors, which are ethically and morally right. However, one should not contribute all his wealth and resources towards such noble causes and try to balance enjoyment and good deeds, so that he can lead a better life with feelings of accomplishment and purpose.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear and well-developed position on whether the most important aspect of being rich is the opportunity to help others. The candidate presents a coherent argument supporting this viewpoint with relevant examples, such as addressing clean water shortages through charity and a company boss improving employee circumstances. The ideas are extended and supported appropriately throughout the essay, meeting the Band 7 requirements where all parts are addressed and the position remains clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introduction that outlines the stance, followed by body paragraphs with specific examples, and concluding effectively. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as "For instance" and "Another point to consider," though some transitions feel slightly formulaic. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, reflecting the Band 7 descriptor for logical flow and clear overall progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student displays a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, incorporating less common lexical items such as "philanthropic activities," "financially stable," and "affluent individuals." There is a good attempt at style, and although minor awkwardness appears in phrases like "kill two birds with one stone" (which is slightly informal for academic writing), the meaning is never impeded. The vocabulary choice aligns well with the Band 7 descriptor for adequate and appropriate range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The essay contains a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentences, showing good overall control of grammar and punctuation. Frequent error-free sentences are present, such as "When a person is financially stable and has accumulated enough wealth to live the rest of his life... he is in a prime position to help others." While minor issues exist, such as slight wordiness or minor preposition choices, they are infrequent and do not impede communication, comfortably securing a Band 7 score.
